Is It Us, Or Is The New GM Starting To Look More And More Like The Old GM?

General Motors Co.’s campaign to prove it’s new is making it look pretty old — and using the world’s largest media market to do it.

Behind the glitz of new metal at this week’s New York Auto Show, or the improving results in that automotive black hole also known as European operations, or the evanescent novelty of being led by the first woman to head a global automaker, is a GM struggling to match what it’s doing with what it’s saying.

The largest automaker’s chance to show it “gets it” by doing the right thing and honoring claims for Cobalt accidents that occurred before its 2009 bankruptcy is falling short. It knew of the problems, tied to 13 deaths, as far back as 2001; it replaced the faulty ignition switch in its parts bin, but declined to issue a recall.

Given that the New GM has the same players pretty much as the Old GM, why would anyone expect anything different?

Yes if it is the same players then what has GM learned? GM has a lot of explaining to do. If Mary Barra is as good as some people say she really needs to "clean house". That is the only way the new GM will ever be credible (as well as herself). There really is no choice. Unless there is full disclosure as a result of Valakuse's report GM cannot be trusted. Marry Barra needs to do more than put her own people in. She needs to fire the 2 engineers and anyone else associated with the ignition switch recall debackle. But not doing this she is empbracing what the old GM was guilty of. It will be a P.R. nightmare and very damaging to them if she does not take appropriate action.
