New Audi Crossover Most Likely To Be Named TTQ Not Q4 As Reported
An offroad compact SUV concept that hints at Audi’s fifth SUV model most likely will carry a name under the TT family, rather than Q4, as previously reported by the media.

The TT Offroad Concept unveiled here Sunday, when produced in about two years, could become the fourth derivative of the TT family, possibly called the TTQ, people familiar with Audi’s plans say.

Ten years ago, Fiat’s Alfa Romeo brand used the Q4 suffix for the four-wheel drive variant of its 156 wagon. Alfa later used Q2 for front-wheel-drive variants of the 156 with an advanced antispin system.

For the same reason, Audi’s subcompact SUV, due next year, won’t be called Q2 as previously reported, but rather Q1, company sources told Automotive News Europe at the Beijing auto show.

Audi's naming is becoming more complicated.

It's still not as complicated as BMW's naming strategy xDrive28i, e-drive, r-drive or whatever else is out there.

no actually it is nuttie. Xdrive = AWD ... r-drive = RWD ... it is not that complicated.

And 28i = 2.0 liter turbo; 35i = 3.0 liter twin turbo. So what does the 8 or 5 stand for? So simple.

Obviously Autospies readers struggle with letters and numbers!

It's sDrive, rather than r-drive, and the eDrive tag is now also being used. Not really that different to Fronttrak, Quattro or e-tron from Audi.

@jeffgall, What would you call a 320i, if you called the 328i a 320i? Or a 116i, if you called the 114i or the 118i a 116i? BMW have a number of engines that generate different outputs. Using existing established model designations seems simpler to me than coming up with something new.. unless you've a better naming convention?

Detune, throw a Beetle body on it and it's what we've been looking for all these years.

I'll wait for the TT sedan which slots in between the A3 and A4.
