NEW YORK AUTO SHOW: ANOTHER Look At The U.S. Production-Ready Audi Q3
For a bit of time we've been waiting. Tapping our foot and looking at our watches, it seems as though Audi has been taking its time making sure the Q3 makes it to our shores. With an assault of all-new product taking aim at the market — BMW X1, Lexus NX and Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class — Audi has to keep interest in the Q3 strong.

Making an appearance at the 2014 New York Auto Show was such a thing.

Sporting a silver paint job and a cocoa interior, it didn't look at though it would be one of the marque's cheaper offerings. In fact, I thought it was a Q5 at first. The painted fender flares help add to the confusion.

After seeing the more enthusiastically designed products in this new class — the GLA and NX come to mind — it seems as though the Q3 may not strike a chord with a market that wants to stand out from the crowd. If they didn't want to, the CLA-Class wouldn't have booming sales.

All things considered, that's just our take. What say YOU, Spies? Is the polished up Q3 looking like a WINNER or has the four rings styled it too conservative for its own good?

Stud? No
Dud? No

Thud. I am so totally and completely disenchanted with Audi styling. I got my current car because I was excited with where Audi was going. Two years later, it's all the same. It's all redundant. It's all so homogenized.

It looks like there might be more room behind the rear seat, compared to my Tiguan. But that alone isn't enough for me to trade up. I want diesel, as well as more bells and whistles than VW offers. Have to wait and see how they can be optioned.

I suspect that it is a fair point to suspect that the Q3 is "merely" a repackaged VW Tiguan, although moved onto the new MQB platform.

Nevertheless, if it has the proper mannerisms, amenities and the like, it might be a viable product to ... at least partially ... plug the longstanding niche of a compact EU luxury hatchback.

True, it is divergent from the effective progenitor of this segment, which was a bit hotter (and also less two doors), namely the Porsche 944. To buy one of these today in the USA market, you're forced to look to Asia.

It'll sell like hot cakes I'm sure. Styling wise I see nothing really wrong with it, and I don't think the fact it doesn't stand out much will necessarily put people off, just look at the Q5.

The X1 sold boatloads, and that's ugly as hell!

The Audi Q3 will be a winner in the U.S. market just like its bigger Q5 sibling. The Q3 is pretty much a shrunken Q5 and will offer the same high levels of luxury, technology, connectivity and driving dynamics that have made the Q5 so successful in its segment.

Many people believe the A3 Sedan is styled too conservatively and fails to stand out, but its materials quality, level of standard equipment, technological capabilities, driving dynamics and smoother ride are all superior to the Mercedes-Benz CLA - prospective buyers will see the value of the A3 Sedan is more than skin deep.

So the big question is, "When?"

The Q3 will debut in the U.S. market in Q4 2014 (so around October-November)
