NEW YORK AUTO SHOW CAR WARS! Cadillac ATS Coupe vs. Lexus RC 350 F Sport

NEW YORK AUTO SHOW CAR WARS! Cadillac ATS Coupe vs. Lexus RC 350 F Sport
In the luxury sport coupe class, things are getting heated. That's because there's an onslaught of options and, frankly, it's tough to discern which is the best. And now two more new players are entering the fray.

Dressed in blue trunks and in the right corner is the all-new Cadillac ATS Coupe. Dressed in white trunks and in the left corner is the all-new Lexus RC 350 F Sport.

2014 New York Auto Show

Both will likely be priced in the same competitive sphere and there's no question they both will have similar technology that can be had in rear-weel and all-wheel drive setups.

Where they're differentiated is in how they go about packaging this up. The ATS takes a conservative approach while the RC is more than eager to get in your face.

Of course there can only be one winner though. So, what will it be?

WHICH car takes the cake for you: the Cadillac ATS Coupe or the Lexus RC 350 F Sport?

I cast my vote for the ATS -- a nice clean design that should wear well. Meanwhile, the Lexus has a face that maybe even a mother couldn't love.

Well, I like the Lexus not the staid design of the ATS. Also, don't take the turns too fast in the Caddy, the keys might fall out. Why does anyone want a GM car??

The Cadillac gets lost in the crowd. The Lexus stands out but not everyone likes the look. I think I'd take the Lexus personally -- it's more than likely an actually better car since it's a Lexus, and personally the look is starting to grow on me. The ATS Coupe I've found WAY too boring to even consider.

Two girls walk into a bar.

One comes in, kind of looks like she just jumped out of a Macy's catalog, with nicely done hair, nothing too fancy, with attractive yet conservative clothes, heels not too high, and looking pretty classy but nothing fancy.

Another comes in with 6-inch stilettos, tight mini dress, major cleavage, smoky-eye makeup, long, straightened hair and a few extensions for good measure. Everything about her says "look at me".

Which do you choose?

Duh!!! You go for the trashy skank!!

No seriously though, for me the IS350 F-sports perfectly hunkered down look with no wheel gap does it. The really only unattractive part of the IS350 is the side strakes on the rear bumper.

Not to mention the ATS's rear end is overly large and bulbuous!!

The entire front end of the Lexus is unattractive

I'd go for the Lexus. Even though I've never been a fan of the brand, I can see it's changing, and that RC is hot. The Caddy is pleasant looking, but not interesting or exciting...things i look for in a coupe.

LOL. I agree with you, but there are ALOT of people out there that really love the design and think it's the best in the segment. Maybe they're out hunting GILFs.

which is LESS offensive, the Cadillac's rear, or the Lexus' grille?

ATS because it is beautiful and tasteful. The Lexus is hideous.

Matt - you always seem to get it right. The RC is not tasteful or attractive, it try's too hard, its too forced. 10 yrs from now it'll look like an old Subaru...The ATS will still be desirable and attractive. It'll look like a woman in her 50's that still has it -vs- a woman in her 50's who wears trash to attract attention...

Personally, I'd take the RC. The Cadillac, to me, is very plain and boring looking. Gets lost in a crowd. The RC, even though the design is subjective, is much more different and just looks a lot sportier than the ATS coupe. I personally, like the front end of the RC. The rear slats is a bit much, but I'm sure you can easily paint that to match the car.

ATS = Chick car.

RC = Better than M4.

RC-F = Better than Lamborghini.

LOL. Considering the Lamborghini is a total nightmare to drive, that's not really much of a compliment.

They both need to be seen in person to be appreciated. The ATS does not get lost in the crowd, among all the A4/3 Series & C'Class cars its the stand out as its different and very distinctive in its styling. The RC is more "boy racer" in its stance and profile. Mercedes and Cadillac have more conservative coupes where as BMW and this Lexus seem to be more "in your face". The answer is "personal perspective". The RC will appeal to folks that like Japanese cars and ugly cars, the ATS will appeal to folks that like American, and distinctive attractive cars. There is a market for both, I'd say the ATS will have a bigger market and appeal to more people, yes some women, than the RC. The RC is too "Boy Racer" looking... cant see many 50yr olds with money driving that car...

Agreed. I saw the blue ATS Coupe at NAIAS and thought that it was terrific -- much nicer than it appears in these photos.

Lexus please. The Cadillac is as dull as dishwater.

I agree these two cars are aimed at the same buyer based on market segment, but I don't think either one is going to be cross shopped with the other very often.

Lexus seems to be going after more of the 370Z/Cayman/Ftype Coupe style crowd, albeit with four seats. The Caddy seems to be more in line with understated style, much like the new 3/4 series and C class. I don't think someone who walks into a dealer looking for a RC is going to like the styling of the ATS and vice versa.

Performance is another argument all together, though.

After driving both, I decided to go with the Cadillac ATS. I prefer the look of the RC but the interior was not as nice and it felt a bit tight or cramped to me. The ATS also had better handling in my opinion.
