Weak Yen Allows Toyota To Outsell VW And GM For Third Straight Quarter
Toyota Motor Corp. outsold Volkswagen Group and General Motors Co. for a third straight quarter, helped by a weaker yen.

Sales at Toyota, including its Hino Motors Ltd. and Daihatsu Motor Co. units, rose to 2.58 million units in the January-to-March period, the Japanese automaker said today. Second place is too close to call as GM and VW said they sold about 2.4 million each, and the German company hasn't disclosed numbers for its MAN and Scania heavy trucks.

In the United States, Toyota Motor Sales USA was in third place during the quarter, selling 520,997 units (down 2 percent compared with the same period last year). GM led with 649,637 sales (down 2 percent) and Ford Motor Co. was second with 580,260 units (down 3 percent). Volkswagen Group of America was in eighth place, with 133,514 sales (down 7 percent). Overall U.S. sales rose 1 percent.

So the Asians manipulate their currencies to sell all of their crap here. We already know that.

Answer these two questions.
1. Why do we only care when its the Japs doing it and not the Koreans?
2. Are we ever going to do anything about it or just complain as we line up at Walmart to buy another couple of tvs or cellphones or wait for our imported and illegally subsidized Asian cars?

Might GM's sales woes be attributed to something else, like lackluster products few people want, or a less-than-sterling reputation?

Except most high volume Toyota models are made in the US, while models like Fusion are made in Mexico. You don't see discounts or price reductions on imported Lexus models, short term Yen rate has relatively little to do with demand. Sounds like sour-grapes from a GM or Ford employee.

It's not the weak yen alone, but appropriate/competent product, a build quality that VW only wishes it could have, and reliability that VW has no hope in hell of matching.

Keep dreaming maybe 10 years ago, the quality and reliability of Toyota products is at it's worst levels.

But that is still WAY higher than VW. Warranty incidence rates at the dealer level prove that categorically.

And despite all this issues VW manages to be #2 in the world? Just imagine if they could only get rid of half of this issues, they would be unstoppable. Regardless of your bashing of brands they are all selling extremely well worldwide. I guess most people don't give a rat a$$ about your ideology.

But VW owns about 25 brands. They're the Yahoo of the auto industry. Want to up sales numbers? Just buy another brand.

And by your logic you would agree with this statement: "Eat feces. 5 trillion flies cannot be wrong."

Your statement has nothing to do with my comment. I merely stated the fact that VW owns brands and that is a big reason why their sales volume is so high.

Toyota & GM have a handful of brands and sell more than VW's dozen or so brands.
Fiat's sales volume went up as well when they acquired Chrysler, not because they sold more Fiats.

Why is weak Yen a reason, when Toyotas sold in USA are made in USA, and with more percentage if parts sourced within USA that any other GM or Ford cars ?
