Still A Chick Car? Mid-Engine 2015 Mazda MX-5 Renderings Surface

Twenty-five years after the original Mazda MX-5 was revealed at the 1989 Chicago Motor show, Mazda has given us our first insight into the technology that will underpin the all-new fourth-generation MX-5 – due on sale in early 2015. Now our exclusive images show how the car could look.

Displayed at last week's New York Motor Show wasn't the new Mazda MX-5 itself, but the advanced new SKYACTIV-chassis and engine that will form the backbone of the new MX-5, and the new Alfa Spider being co-developed alongside it. Mazda has confirmed the engine will be positioned behind the front axle and closer to the car’s centre than ever before, plus the centre of gravity will be lower than previous generations – factors that should improve the handling.

009 - - - Did you read the article before posting flame bait?

How did you interpret the sentence from the article to mean Mid-Engine:
"Mazda has confirmed the engine will be positioned behind the front axle and closer to the car’s centre than ever before . . . "

Did you look at the rendering to figure out where the engine was going in that drawing?

i was under the impression that if the engine was behind the front axle, and ahead of the rear, it was mid-engined - regardless of where in the middle it was placed. often, a mid-engined will be further specified as FMR or RMR to clarify.

This is a "mid-front" engine, NOT mid-engine. Autospies has never bothered to be accurate in their headlines.

Somewhat, all S2000's are blushing with flattery. Granted, it does look good and has a bit more substance than the current MX-5 design, but it really does look like the evolution of the Honda.

Oops, meant "Somewhere", not "Somewhat".

Design was one of the main issues I had against this car, but as all the Mazda vehicles nowadays look incredibly amazing, I'm pretty sure the new MX-5 will look as amazing as this.

Miata = chick/hair dresser car. I belong to about a dozen car clubs in Southern and Northern California. Literally no one reveres the Miata as an iconic sports car. It sort of handles OK but it has a massive horsepower deficit. Why has there NEVER been an RX5 variant to the MX5? The RX7 and RX8 are legitimate. The Miata is 1000% poseur!

Thanks Matt. The entire auto press community is wrong and you are probably right. Southern CA and Northern CA, hell of a trek--even for a guy with a big penis.

I am active in many clubs as a function of my business. In in buying and selling the kinds of restored cars I am involved in the business, it is suicide NOT to belong to car clubs and to make appearances at their functions. Just because you cannot conceive of anything beyond your postered bedroom and your Xbox does not mean the rest of us are leading equally lame lives.

As for the automotive press, they have ALWAYS wished for more power in the Miata.

As for the trek, I'm 2 hours from Los Angeles and less than an hour from San Francisco. I drive to So Cal and sometimes fly into SFO and rent a car.

It's not possible to be two hours from LA and under an hour from SF. They're about 5 hours apart if you're lucky

@Gambit you're a dimwit: a drive to LA is about 90 minutes and a flight to San Francisco for me is at most 45 minutes, so learn to read: "I drive to So Cal and sometimes fly into SFO and rent a car."

Still a chick car? It never was, so how can it still be one?

I don't know if this rendering is genuine or if someone just decided to lift the front end off the Hazumi (new Mazda 2 concept) and photoshop it onto the front of an MX-5. Regardless, it is definitely the best looking rendering I've seen thus far. It even beats the rendering that looked like a BMW with a Mazda 6 front end stitched to it. My main cause of doubt is that official word is that the traditional oval grill is supposed to remain intact and somehow incorporated into a new evolution of Mazda's Kodo design language. Now perhaps they meant oval-ish, in which this rendering could very well be an accurate representation. Ultimately I suppose it doesn't matter. If the car ends up looking like this I will be more than satisfied. Although the chrome bar along the grill could use some slimming down. There has always been a certain simplicity to the Miata. This might be too drastic a departure for some purists. Although personally I don't mind the decision to go edgy instead of overly conservative and simple. Toyota, Honda, and Mazda have that dull market more than cornered. Fortune favors the bold.
