How Well Can They Do? Peugeot Considers Re-Entering US Market After 23 Years
Peugeot S.A., the French manufacturer of Citroen and Peugeot and the second-largest automaker in Europe, says it is "considering" a US comeback after 23 years of absence. Currently in the midst of reorganization that includes four major benchmarks, CEO Carlos Tavares told Edmunds that a successful completion could be followed by a triumphant return to the US. First, though, Peugeot wants to establish a separate high-end brand for Citroen’s DS models, reduce model lines from 45 to 25 and return to profitability

I think if they partner with somebody, and put a hot hatch and a CUV on the market, they could be a decent niche.

Peugeot needs money for lots of advertising, a decent dealer network and PRODUCT if they want to re-enter the U.S. market.

The issue is that they would be entering a very crowded and competitive market(s) in small cars, hot-hatches, mid-size sedans and sub-compacts.

If they follow Fiat's lead, it can be successful. They have to come with niche products first while partnering with another brand to offset operating costs. Then branch out to more mainstream products. The key, I think, is approaching it with a car line that oozes character. Their new 3008 and RCZ are really nice designs. Would love to see the RCZ over here.

If Audi was going to renter the US market after 23 years, the headline would read > All Car Mfg Who Sell In The US Should Now Seek Refuge > Why do I say this, This website is so biased towards the Germans, that this place is a joke!!!!

Ugly cars + garbage quality = no chance. If Peugeot wants in, they will have to offer a Hyundai warranty, be to the cent competitive in price, and have Honda/Toyota/Hyundai/Ford reliability. In Europe VW is strong and PSA is on a death watch. In NA VW is sputtering and clueless about the market, so how in blazes is PSA going to have a snow ball's chance in hell?

Listen-Fiat has done it. Others can too if they have some interesting product. Peugeot has some interesting products like the 3008 and RCZ. They will also need a CUV as well. Like Fiat they should start small. Peugeot does not really compete with Audi and BMW in Europe anyway except in the A and B markets. They are more a competitor to Ford and Opel. Therefore it must be a lower price point. They could compete with Mini, however.I for one would like to see them do it.

Fiat has NOT done it. Fiat does not have the same market penetration as say Toyota. Nor does it have a mainstream product line. Selling two niche models is not a brilliant reentry.

"... same market penetration as say Toyota"??? Who does? I mean GM has that level in the US market. VW has it in theirs, but who has the kind of market share of Toyota outside of their own market? That's a big ask don't you say?

Matt-Comparing Fiat with Toyota is absurd.Rather a proper comparison is Fiat to Mini. You don't have to sell in such high volume to be profitable.Mini has made it here in the US and does not sell anywhere near the volume of GM,Ford, Toyota etc.True Fiat needs more product and that thats coming in the500X(Sharing it's platform with Jeep Renegade). Yes they need more product but you cannot say they are not successful.I see more 500 L's where I live than Kia Souls,Scion Xb's, or even Mini Countryman's.Peugeot has product. It's just a matter how they want to market them.
