Lexus Says It Is Missing The Boat By Not Having A 7 Seat RX Crossover In The Mix

What is the point of having a large car, like a crossover, if you cant occasionally take six more passengers with you to go for dinner or a short journey? That’s what many buyers today are asking too, and Lexus believes his model would fit a lot more customers if it had a third row.

The crossover segment in Lexus’ lineup is currently filled by the RX model. It’s based on the Toyota Highlander, but despite that being offered now with seven seats, the RX will have to wait a bit more until its outdated shapes will be refreshed and extra seats will be added. And that’s because the all-new NX compact crossover is launching later this year.

It's interesting because the German brands seem to introduce new vehicles like every year (And have no problem selling tons of them), but Lexus is incredibly slow on introducing new vehicles.

I'm surprised that Lexus has sought to add a 3rd row to the RX line already. If they do, it'll really give the MDX, QX, and Enclave a run. I'm also surprised that Cadillac hasn't attempted to utilize its Lambda platform to do the same.

Oops, I meant that "Lexus has NOT sought to add a 3rd row to the RX"

The next Generation Traverse/Acadia/Enclave will have a Cadillac model as well. Totally in the works and completely logical. Seems stupid its was not in the lineup 5 years ago? Though 4 models off one platform seems steep in one market regardless of who their selling too...

Given that the RX and the Highlander are based on the same platform and that the Highlander has room for 7, it seems pretty feasible to introduce a 7 seat RX in short order. If not, then Lexus is neither as nimble as-- nor as proactive as-- its competition.

The RX's shape prevents it from having a 3rd row, same reason why an X6 can never have a 3rd row.

It is nice to have but unless its a free (or cheap) option, I can live without. If you really need to haul that many people around, take 2 cars. Generally, a fully loaded 7 passenger vehicle will be more dangerous to drive since the weight will play around with the vehicles driving dynamics, especially if its based on a smaller vehicle frame.

Doesn't the GX have a 3rd row option?

The GX drives like a third world chicken truck. A GX replacement off the RX would be a brilliant move. The current GX looks two feet too tall for its width.

And it has the Terminator grille

I wouldn't know what a 3rd world chicken truck drives like. But from the looks of it I wouldn't go near that thing...

Agreed! It and the equally horrid Lexus Land Cruiser are not Mercedes level.

It sells with steep discounts and give away leases. Trust me on this one. Dealers get bonuses for pushing them out the door. Drive a GX versus a Mercedes ML and the Mercedes is the better drive. Same is true for the LX versus the GL. The irony is that Mercedes has VERY attractive lease offers.

That's a bunch of Bull*hit the GX is one of the highest grossing vehicles in the line up with no incentives except on the base model with no equiptment. You don't know di*k....
