RENDERED SPECULATION: Step Aside, Audi Q7 — The Q8 Is Coming To Town
As the top three luxury German autobuilders continue to fight over the tiniest bits of market share, it turns out that Audi will be, in fact, pursuing a large, luxury sport-utility vehicle. Considering the volume that can be had if the four rings gets the mix just right, this doesn't come as a surprise.

If you're lost trying to figure out where the Q8 will fit into the mix, think along the lines of flagship. Much like the A8 sits on top of all the other sedan variants, the Q8 will mirror this, except with the company's SUV product portfolio.

Word on the street suggests that entry-level models will be equipped with six-cylinder mills while the range topper will be coming from Audi's Quattro GmbH division — in other words, it will pack some serious punch.

...The Q8 has been conceived to extend Audi’s reach at the top of its line-up and to provide the company with added sales in potentially crucial markets such as China, the Middle East and the United States.

In terms of performance and technology, the Q8 is described as being on a par with Audi’s A8 flagship saloon, albeit with the added ability to head off road thanks to its raised ride height and, on top-end models, adjustable air suspension...

hmmm...before I opened this and just saw the small pic, I did not notice the circles on the grille...but did notice the shape of the grille. I thought it was a new Hyundai large SUV rendering. Who is copying whom?

I love the craziness of how the Germans invent imaginary niches and fill them.

People buy them, what't the problem? It's not imaginary if they find their way in to peoples garages.

Niche? Looks like this is posed to go up against the GL. Those things are everywhere by me. Audi wants to get in and get a piece of the pie.

the Q7 already competes with the GL, they are literally identical in size. The Q9 would have to be something different or it wouldn't make any sense.

The GL is much bigger than the Q7. It also has a higher starting price. Q7 does battle with the X5, ML and QXwhatever. I have a Q7, my next door neighbor has a GL. GL has a much larger 3rd row/cargo area. It's somewhere between the Q7 and an Escalade in size.

The Q7 and GL may be similar in size, but Mercedes executes the 3rd row much better. The GL has 6 inches more legroom and over 3 inches more headroom than the Q7. The GL also has over 20 cubic ft of more overall cargo capacity. The overall interior dimensions of the Q7 are closer aligned to the MDX, yet the MDX still bests it in overall cargo volume by 18 cu ft and a better price point.

...but the MDX uses inferior materials and looks like ass.

There is most definitely a clear and distinct market for the Audi Q8 or whatever name Audi will give its flagship SUV.

The current Audi range-topper, the Q7, competes in size and price with the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz ML. It is not a true third-row SUV like the Mercedes-Benz GL was designed to be.

Audi does not have an SUV that is comparable in size or in price to the Mercedes-Benz GL, which is the exact segment the new Q8 will be in.

You can expect the Q8 to be a much larger SUV with more room for third row passengers and a larger trunk.

Um,Nuttie, did you not read the article? Based on the description, the Q8 will compete with the X6, MLC, and RR Sport.

The Q7 is 200.3" long, the GL is 200.6". The Q7 is 78.4" wide, the GL 76.4". Please, tell me more about how the GL is bigger.

If the GL is bigger inside, it's because Benz and Audi use the space differently, but they're the same size outside.

No, cidflekken, I didn't read the article, but now I have. Either way the Q8 is competing in a market that Audi doesn't currently compete in (coupe-like SUV based on the Q7) instead of the large, 3rd row Mercedes-Benz GL.

JRob, it's the interior volume and use of space I was referring to. The Q7 maybe a hulking SUV on the outside but on the inside the GL's use of space allows for a much roomier 3rd row.

LOL. All that drivel stating Audi's intent with the Q8..without ever reading the article? I find that quite bizarre and I'll just keep it safe and leave it at that.

Thanks to the Koreans, now all Audis look like Hyundai/KIAs.
