Even Outdated Vehicles Can't Stop Audi - April 2014 Global Sales Surge 11.6% With China Sales Up 16.8% - Expands Gap With Mercedes-Benz
(Reuters) - Audi (VOWG_p.DE) posted another double-digit sales gain in April even as its product cycle has peaked, keeping German rival Mercedes-Benz (DAIGn.DE) with refreshed models at bay.

Deliveries at the Volkswagen-owned brand rose 11.6 percent to 149,050 autos, the fourth-strongest rate of increase in the past 15 months, extending the year-to-date tally to 561,900, the world's No. 2 luxury carmaker said on Thursday.

That compares with a 14.2 percent rise to 133,077 cars in April at Mercedes which is boasting a spate of redesigned models to recoup ground after dropping to third place in luxury sales rankings behind Audi in 2011.

"Such strong growth rates are positively surprising," said Frankfurt-based Commerzbank analyst Sascha Gommel. "Audi's model range is relatively old compared with Mercedes and BMW."

Besides the newly-revamped A3 compact line, April volume was driven by the Q3 compact SUV and the A4 and A6 station wagons, all of which have been selling in core European markets for more than 2.5 years.

"We continue to beat our own targets with the strong result in April that builds on first-quarter double-digit growth," Audi sales chief Luca de Meo said.

Aren't the C and E class currently the oldest platforms in their segments?

By the way, Audi sold 15,973 units more than Benz in April which is mainly attributed to Audi's saving grace China.

Audi sales increased 16.8% in China to Mercedes 38%, more than twice the pace of Audi's.

Again I hope Audi has a chance to touch the coveted Sales Crown Mercedes held for Decades, and Bimmer has been carrying now for close to a decade.

It would be a shame for them and their spokesman GermanNut to make all this fuss for nothing.

Good God, can you imagine how insufferable he'd be if Audi did "win" that stupid title?

Yes, I believe you are correct. The E-class only got a refresh the last time around and the C is definitely the oldest.

Audi's SUVs the Q7 and Q5 are older than Mercedes-Benz's new GLK and GL offerings.

Again, as with the A8/S comparison, not the volume leaders and the GL, overall, is priced higher than the Q7

The A8 is also much older than the new S-class.

Right, but that's not where the gap is and the S-Class is not a volume leader so it's lead over the A8 isn't going to offset the volume generators.

With MB becoming sore loser, Audi is a winner!
Rightfully so!

Well, there's a difference between having the "right" customer vs having "any" customer. Kudos to Audi for doing a great job in the Chinese market.
