AWESOME or AWFUL? What IF Porsche Built A V8-Powered 911?
You know, it's funny. A lot of major corporations — to be more specific, the automakers — seem to operate like government organizations. They're not particularly nimble, they're slow to react AND there's A LOT of smoke and mirrors.

Auto builders rarely show you what's really under the kimono. It's like sausage factory.

But once and a while you get to see a glimpse of something amazing. Take, for example, Porsche's recent inside look into a vehicle that was developed as a prototype but never was heard of until this week. That would be the 965.

Bodied as a 959 and featuring an Audi V8, it's clear this vehicle never made it past initial testing. Sporting a matte black paint job and some minor camouflage, this car is raw. Equipped with specific instructions and exposed wiring, there's no doubting this was an engineering mule.

Though the clip is relatively short being under two minutes, we're left wondering "what if?"

Is it AWESOME or AWFUL that Porsche built the 965? Should it have pursued a V8-powered 911 or is it better left to be a six-cylinder powered auto?

"Porsche 911" and "V8 engine" - two terms, that most of you wouldn't expect in one car. This particular concept car from the Porsche history reunites these two conflicting ideas.

Sorry, but if say that, you do not understand much about design and style icons.. Probably you better go to brands as Lexus, GM and those who just create monsters of ugliness

So by your idiotic logic, if Porsches are so iconic, then why did they NEED to create a sedan and SUVs just to stay relevant?? Christ even the company themselves stated as much. You must also think that Benz, BMW, and Audi also aren't "style icons" because none of their vehicles ever look like the previous gen.

Porsche will come in time with a flat 8. It would be nice if they could find a way to fit boxer engines also in their Macans, Cayennes, Panameras instead of using upgraded Audi engines.

How about a triangular 12?

I would not mind a V8 911 because that means a V8 Cayman would be possible.

Definitely a flat 8 in a 911 would be amazing! But have they prove how far enough they can go with the flat 6 yet?
What other car manufacturer has achieved so many victories with basically the same engine (flat 6)?

The whole essence of the 911 is ringing its neck to extract every last drop of speed. That is what is rewarding. The whole engineering concept of the car revolves around this. Porsches have always done more (performance) with less (power). Their 2014 LeMans race car has a 2.0 litre 4 cylinder.

I am a 911 guy, and I would never want a V8 in my 911. I love the burble of a V8, and they are great in SUVs and big sedans. When I heard that Chevy has been experimenting with a V6 for the Corvette I had 2 thoughts. 1) the Corvette buyers will never go for that; and 2) The car would finally have a chance to match the 911 on character and precision handling. My dad has a C7. Its really amazing - for a Corvette.

No V8 for the 911.

P.S. Porsche's putting turbo 4 cylinders in the refreshed 911 and Cayman/Boxsters.

A Porsche 911 with a V8 engine? I would be first in line to order one.

The boxer engine is terrific, but lacks serious torque. A proper V8, perhaps even turbocharged, would be a great addition.

I think even a few of the die-hard purists might secretly agree.

It would never be a V8, only a flat 8. Porsche has built flat 8 but only in their mid engine race cars. Even though Porsche has dramatically improved the chassis of the 911 with it's rear engine putting an 8 in the rear could pose a great weight distribution challenge for predictable handling. Therefore unless they could make the weight of a flat 8 come in similar to the flat 6 I don't ever see them doing it. I think more likely finally changing the 911 to mid engine would be the more logical thing to do. Also although it is an icon it is finally time for Porsche to take a styling leap. A little more 918/Carrera GT influence please!!!!
