BMW Considering Expanding MINI Production To Mexico
BMW Group may build Minis alongside BMW 3-series and 1-series cars at a new plant in Mexico, a German newspaper reported.

BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer has said that the company will need an additional factory in North America to meet rising demand but so far the company has not said whether it favors Mexico or the United States for the plant. The automaker also has not said which vehicles it would build at a new factory.

Handelsblatt said BMW executives favor Mexico for the factory and the company is considering building Minis and its smallest BMW brand vehicles there because these are lower margin vehicles and building them locally would boost profits.

Profoundly DUMB move. Mini owners buy it because it is so British. Building it in Mexico or the USA is a bad move. It would be like Porsche deciding to build the 911 in Chattanooga. Some cars have panache for their country of origin. Mini is one of them.

Don't confuse marketing with margin enhancing production decisions. For the avg consumer, a British flag decal on the roof = British enough.

bad news for you: Mini's have already been produced in Austria at Magma and are now being produced in the Netherlands as well.

I for one don't really car that much given the terrible torque steer and the darty handling. For the money, the GTI is a far superior car.

Matt, more falsehoods, no torque steer on new MINI and yes you can go get a run of the mill GTI for less $, enjoy!
