BMW M4 Vs. Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Can The Old Dog Teach The New Dog Some Tricks?

BMW M4 Vs. Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Can The Old Dog Teach The New Dog Some Tricks?

If the new, fifth-generation BMW M4 has any chance whatsoever of being remembered as one of the great M cars, then it will need to step up, right from the word go, and face the mighty but no longer cutting-edge Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG.

Because if the new twin-turbocharged M4 can’t level with the big-hearted but now seven-year-old C63 on broadly equal terms, it will surely be classed – in M car terms, at least – as a dud.

But before we delve any deeper into the nitty-gritty of how the £56,635 M4 stacks up beside the £57k C63 – tested here in rather more expensive 507 limited-edition guise, costing more than £67k – what’s the difference between the new M4 and its more familiar-sounding cousin, the latest M3? And what does it bring to the table with which to counteract the raw potency of the C63 AMG?

Yes, you are correct. I wouldn't say the BMW M4 got its "ass-handed" to it, but it still lost what was a close battle.

"Neither, truth be told. The M4 is far too good a car in far too many areas to be presented with any kind of a wooden spoon. But at the same time, it’s a touch too digital in some of its key responses beside the old-fashioned brute of a car that is the AMG to be declared as the new, undisputed king."

"But the devil is in the detail in this instance, and when you drill right down into the M4’s personality, shine the light right into its eyes, it doesn’t so much fold as fail to stand up and knock you to the floor. But the C63 does, and that’s the difference. It’s an old-school fighter of a car, and you can’t help but love it that little bit more as a result."

This continues the recent trend that has seen the BMW M division no longer be the standard-bearer to which all competitors are judged against.

So when the M5 bested the RS7, E63 and Panamera recently or the fact that the M4/M3 is still the benchmark. Oh wait, maybe the RS5 can finish 4 to 5 seconds back this time..

Don't forget, BMWm4, winning one comparison test does not mean a vehicle is the standard-bearer. The BMW M5 has also lost to the Audi S6 (not RS6) and Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG in Car and Driver and in Car Magazine to the Audi RS7, Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG and Jaguar XFR-S.

The BMW M3/M4 is also no longer the benchmark. BMW's M3 coupe and sedan used to easily defeat the competition upon the new generation models being launched. This, clearly, is no longer the case as the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG has just showed by defeating the BMW M4.

Also the gap is no longer as great. All the big competitors in this segment (Audi RS5, Mercedes C63 AMG and BMW M4) have gotten closer than ever before. The Audi RS5 is the oldest of the bunch and is therefore not expected to win. The BMW M4 is expected to win and win easily, but that's the change here, the BMW M4 didn't win let alone win easily.

Technically it was a basic comparison without data to provide a victory and the Mercedes C63 won due to having more power and a better exhaust note.

Yet the RS5 hasnt bested a M3 or M4 in years. The New M4 reviews are very good from everyone else. Wait and see until more actual reviews come in based using facts and figures and not just a general opinion & you will see the M4/M3 reigns supreme.

You're correct. I eagerly await the results of comparison tests conducted by the likes of Car and Driver, Road and Track, Automobile Magazine etc. to find out which car is indeed the benchmark of this segment.

I guess the article that 00R posted on the same exact article, just a few days ago, wasn't good enough? Maybe the site wasn't getting enough hits? :-P

we are all just used to bmw m3/4 being the benchmark and now that its losing its way we are all kinda shocked.
with the amount of $ spent in engineering and advancements manufacturers have all closed the gap.
LEXUS is beating bmw's !!! who the hell would have thought that ???
i really wonder what the RC-F will do to the M4, if bmw loses a race to RC-F then you know, its only the M name, not the soul anymore.

All things aside, the MB V8 is 6.2 liters vs. BMW's inline 6 3.0 liter, twice the displacement. The MB engine is a torque monster. BMW's M Division has always placed a premium on low weight, high RPM, great breaking and handling. Mission accomplished.

Again , I am an MB Fan but by the numbers and Engineering the winner is the M4 and that's final boys. Only good point is the BIG V8 of the Benz which also is old and dated now. We have to wait for the new C63 for other duel.
