James May, Of Top Gear Fame, Sets To Make The Trio's FIRST Electric Vehicle Purchase — Would YOU Have Guessed He Would Get THIS?
Though the three boys from Top Gear are beloved here in the States, they actually aren't as well liked back in their homeland. Especially if you speak to the tree huggers over there.

They're not so keen on the pro-car program that has enthusiasts screaming "POWERRRR!" and doing burnouts.

Now one of the more open-minded presenters is making an interesting move. Known for his quirky sense of style and choices in automobiles, James May is the odd one in the group. Now he's said on a radio show that he will be adding a BMW i3 to his fleet.

As one would expect, May has a logical approach as to his decision. Check out his rationale below and if you want to read more, click "Read Article" below!

...“I sort of want to be part of the ‘experiment’. I don’t know what the answer is — or if a car like the i3 is the long term future of the car,” May said. “It’s not that small. It’s actually quite roomy inside. It’s almost a small people carrier.”

Having been part of the BBC Top Gear team for many years — a show which has relentlessly criticised and made fun of electric cars for many years — May said it was time to go green.

“I talk about cars, as I was saying earlier. I make a living out of doing that…I sort of feel obliged to,” he said of his BMW i3 purchase...

Good choice. I'll be interested in what he has to say about it. Did he get the pure EV or the range extender version? Either way, I'm excited to see someone talk about an EV that isn't produced by that a-hole Elon Musk.

If you actually clicked over to read the FULL story, he makes it crystal clear as to why he snapped up an i3 or is at least planning to.

James May is well known to have a quirky aesthetic, so buying a car this overtly funky doesn't strike me as especially out-of-character.

Mind that the i3 looks less ricockulous in Europe (or Japan) than it does in the United States, where boxy ugliness actually stands out. Abroad it's like par for the course. A Nissan Cube also looks absolutely revolting here, but while in Japan I barely even noticed them because they look like every other car on the road.

The i3 also is more "modest" than a Tesla S 85P or whatever, which is of course THE electric car to get if you're into that sort of thing, and modesty might legitimately be a factor in May's decision given his personality.

Plus the Tesla is over twice the price of the i3 here.

If you watch the series you'll notice his daily driver is a Fiat Panda. Yes he has a F430 because he admires cars, but at the root he is still a very practical person. This seems right up his alley.
