Audi S3 Sedan Defeats Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG in Auto Express Comparison Test!

Audi S3 Sedan Defeats Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG in Auto Express Comparison Test!
Audi's sizzling S3 saloon takes the fight to Mercedes' CLA 45 AMG in the battle of the fast four-doors

Fast four-door saloons have been a staple of Audi’s model line-up for decades, but this is the first time the A3 has been given the trademark go-faster treatment.

By packaging a muscular 296bhp turbocharged engine and quattro all-wheel-drive system into the handsome A3 Saloon body, Audi has created the S3 Saloon – a car that aims to blend scorching performance and agile handling with sharp-suited style and plenty of premium kerb appeal. And
at around £33,000, it looks like decent value, too.

However, Audi isn’t the only German brand that offers a hot version of its smallest saloon, because Mercedes has treated its sleek CLA to a muscular makeover courtesy of in-house tuning division AMG.

Featuring a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine that boasts a dizzying 355bhp, as well as the company’s grippy 4MATIC all-wheel-drive transmission, the CLA 45 has all the right ingredients to take the fight to its S3 Saloon rival.

• Mercedes CLA 45 AMG review

This exotic specification comes at a price, though, because the Mercedes will set you back by almost a hefty £42,000. So which of our heavy-hitting duo will land the knock-out punch in this encounter?

Verdict

1st place: Audi S3 Saloon

The Audi S3 Saloon is fast, composed and agile, plus it has a classy cabin and decent practicality. Better still, it can switch from sports saloon to cosseting compact exec at the flick of a switch. Factor in the £10,000 saving over the Merc, and the Audi is a worthy winner.

2nd place: Mercedes CLA 45 AMG

When it comes to style and excitement, the rakish and raucous Mercedes CLA has the upper hand over the Audi S3. It’s also blisteringly quick and has incredibly sure-footed handling. Yet it’s not as comfortable as the Audi, while the hefty price tag and running costs are hard to ignore.

Other subjective opining from the British, I saw the M4 wining over the C63 but in this case all the performance numbers say clearly that the CLA45 is the winner, but also this is coupe with 2 extra doors, the S3 is a sedan so definitely will win in rear seats comfort.

Funny how these reviews are having the exact opposite effect on the consumer...

The CLA's launch dwarfed the A3's sales wise, and the Waiting List for the CLA 45 globally would make one think they had ordered a fresh Rolls Royce

The S3 wins ... on rear seat headroom and legroom according to Auto Express. But when compare based on performance, what these cars were designed for in the first place, the S3 loses every performance measures possible.

Right, after looking at the numbers, the CLA impressed me even more than i thought it would

After wiping the floor with the Audi on nearly every acceleration test, the CLA manages to be quieter and match the Audi in fuel efficiency...

Winner is pretty clear to me

Idiotic article. If you're going to worry about rear leg room and bitch about the price of an AMG variant while ignoring its whole point of performance, then compare the S3 to the dang CLA 250. The AMG is for presence and performance. Yes, if you want zero of the former and less of the latter, and don't feel like paying more for the better performance anyway, the S3 is the perfect option.

AND, this is exactly what I've been saying. These two aren't "direct" competitors in the true spirit of direct competition. The rear seat in the CLA is virtually useless except for toddlers who don't require a car seat of any type.

Luckily, I don't need a backseat, so bring on the CLA45 to my driveway, pronto! If I did need a backseat, I still wouldn't go with an A3/S3.

The same can be said about the S3. Is it worth the premium over say, a VW Jetta?

CLA isn't even close, again.
