BMW And Toyota Now Collaborating To Build 911 Rival?

Toyota and BMW's collaboration will extend into a new range of mid-engined sports cars to challenge the benchmark Porsche 911, CAR can reveal.

Developed under the codename Silk Road 2, the proposed BMW Z7 and Lexus ZC/ZR are cutting-edge sports cars which will cost around €90,000, or £73,000. Slap bang in Porsche Carrera territory, then.

Don't confuse this with the first BMW-Toyota sports car project already confirmed by Munich. The German-Japanese alliance is co-developing a pair of front-engined BMW Z4/Toyota GT86 replacements, due around 2017.

Best wishes! The iconic 911 has a fiercely loyal following, so don't expect too many converts. You might attract people who like the *idea* of a 911, but not the actual car.

Why would anyone want to build a 911 fighter? The 911 is just a sports car and there are others that are easily as good. Just build a new Supra for $35-60K and rake in the cash.

Ignorance. And stupidity. Do you even know how much Supra was back in the 90's?

Supra was around from 60k ~ 80k if you were to think of it in today's dollar.

It seems like a good idea. I guess finally BMW will be somewhat reliable, and Toyota will learn some good engineering.

@JDMUSMuscle you, sir, are a biased piece of work.

That's a good come back, considering the fact that you actually got the price range of Supra wrong.

And I am biased. Now I think that's pretty funny, coming from you.

Do you even know how stupid you sound like right now?

Let's say Impala was sold at 50k~60k today. Who is going to buy? Are you seriously comparing Impala to a Supra now? Not to mention the Impala in the old days is different from the FWD Impala that GM makes nowadays.

Why are you so dumb, seriously?

Interesting... 911 enjoys much of success from its rear-biased weight distribution, so I bet this car would need to be an MR to rival that. In essence, they will build a Cayman with more power than 911!

BMW's future X7, 7-series, and possible 8-series coupe and 9-series sedan will definitely move the brand upmarket. I believe the Toyota collaboration has more to do with cost sharing for such items such as: aluminum ,carbon fiber and lithium ion battery production. BMW will be using the inline-6 twin turbo for the Z4 and Z7. The "reliable" Denso parts shared between Toyota and Lexus will not put on the Z4 or Z7. BMW and Toyota's deal will save millions for each other.

Jaguar was smart to price the F-Type below the 911, rather than go head to head against that beast. Why try to beat the 911, when you can just sell cheaper to a different market? Look at these sales figures to compare the F-Type against the 911 over the last 8 months and you'll see that F-Type sales didn't put a dent into 911 sales - 2 completely different markets. People in the market for a 911 are Porsche enthusiasts or badge whores who will not cross shop the cheaper Jag:

F-Type Sales Volume: http://www.goodcarbadcar.net/2013/06/jaguar-f-type-sales-figures-usa-canada.html

911 Sales Volume: http://www.goodcarbadcar.net/2011/01/porsche-911-sales-figures.html

It's the same mistake GTR fanboys make when they expected to steal sales from the 911 - not a dent since the GTR came to market.

BMW/Toy need to create a new enthusiast niche separate and distinct from the 911, otherwise they will fail.

There are many of us that are not 911 fans. Many years ago I drove a Lotus Europa and I still value the precise handling of a good Mid-engined car. I would much rather have the competitor or a Cayman S.
I see the 911 as the worlds most complete and wonderful development job on a poor design. The Europa on the other hand was the worlds worst development job on a brilliant design.
If Porsche had made the decision to put the Cayman on equal footing with the 911, the 911 would be done. If even 20% of the development time and money that has been spent fixing the inherent problems with the 911 had been spent on the development of the Cayman, It would be a far superior car to the 911. The reality however is that car making is a business and Porsche likes the money like all other car makers. Porsche is free to do whatever they want. I'm sorry for what could have been.
