PAIN AT THE PUMP: Senators Want To Raise Gas Taxes By 12 Cents A Gallon
Two U.S. senators on Wednesday said they want to raise the federal gasoline and diesel tax by 12 cents a gallon to prevent a fund that pays for about half of the country's transportation projects from running out of money in August.

Republican Senator Bob Corker and Democrat Chris Murphy called for raising the tax 6 cents a year for two years and linking future fuel tax increases to inflation.

The gasoline tax is now 18.4 cents a gallon, and the diesel tax is 24.4 cents a gallon.

The tax has not been increased since 1993, and hiking taxes is politically unpopular ahead of midterm elections in November.

Just look north of the border and see what those poor Canucks are paying for gas! And some provinces even pay tax on tax (provincial sales tax on top of federal exise tax and provincial road tax).

"I know raising the gas tax isn't an easy choice, but we're not elected to make easy decisions. We're elected to make the hard ones"

More like "Dumb" decisions. And that is something the Americans are very much good at.

And you wonder yourself why the United States is going backwards economically and politically, compared to the European countries.

And you wonder yourself why many of "famous" Americans received the THE ORDER OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE from the English Queen (And some from the French President, the Legion of Honor of France)

And the funnier fact is that, the Americans do not care about something like this as long as they can just play Call of Duty on their Xbox to show their petty "Patriotism" lol!

comment: the first part of that comment may be true, the second part is ridiculous.

it's about time use the gas tax to encourage the right behavior. it hasn't been raised in more than 20 years. they'd need to raise it a hell of a lot more than that just to adjust it appropriately relative to inflation.

we might even get a little closer to energy independence. and avoid recurrences of the $4 trillion of our tax dollars spent in iraq and afghanistan to stabilize oil.

we can pay at the pump, or in the lives of our soldiers and bloated deficits.

the fiscally responsible, and humane method is to pay at the pump.

support our troops - raise the gas tax.

Besides th $4+ gas prices now, except the corrupt government to add new higher federal gas tax to allegedly help maintain roads.

Remember that barry obamma got his greasy hands on $1 trillion of dollars. He repeated stated the money will rebuild bridges and highways across America. His famous lie and deception "the money will be for shovel ready jobs." As always, obamma made the money disappear and NONE of the bridges and roads were repaired. Remember the democrat party thievery and lies when you vote in Novemenber.

You know so little about how laws are passed. The jobs bill by Obama and the Dems could not get passed congress with the GOP and tea party voters striking it down. The bill was to put workers back to fixing the bridges and roads. If you had half a brain and stopped the talking points lie Fox and check out the fact at fact check dot org you would then understand how things work. Living under a rock and listening to the speaking heads on the right does not get you the truth. And lastly the Keystone Pipeline does not benefit the US since the oil is from the sands of Canada and are very heavy thick product that is 100% exported. In addition many of the GOP Gov do not want it thru their state. Can you believe this?? Its true so go on and google the Keystone Pipeline and read articles that quote the Gov. of those states not wanting it including the farmers and ranchers.

Do it, make sure it all goes to road infrastructure. I pay 50 cents more if the would build and American Autobahn.

If there is to be an American Autobahn (zero chance), there better be more effective, disciplined driver training as there is in Europe. I can't imagine the usual lane changing and tailgating chaos going on at at 100+ mph.

I'm still reeling from the Bush years where we elected, and then re-elected and our dumbest president ever who was brought in to serve the puppet masters that got him elected, and them plunged the US into the biggest recession since the 20s. Millions of lives destroyed, middle class destroyed. Well as least he didn't raise taxes.

I've got a crazy idea. How about spending less?

When the boss tells me I'm out of my mind asking for a raise the rising costs of burdensome regulation (and O-care) choking the life out of business, that's what I do. I'd urge the the people to do the same thing my bosses do. Tell them, "Get your own house in order first."

spending less? did you even read the article or is that just your boiler plate response to a revenue increase?

spend less on what?! roads?!

you do realize that the gas tax is a flat $0.184/gal, and that it has been that for over 20 years?

This $.012 increase is nearly IDENTICAL to the increase in inflation over the past 21 years.

Please see inflation calculator below for reference:

http://www.bls.gov/data/inflation_calculator.htm

i implore you to think beyond simple Fox News talking points. Our future generations deserve/require a more enlightened conversation.

You're going to find many more taxes and fees on gasoline as we aren't consuming near the amount we used to. Look at any market that is declining and you see the price continue to be inflated to compensate for lost profits.
