Volkswagen Pulls The Wraps Off Of 544 HP Beetle GRC Racer

Volkswagen has officially pulled the wraps off its latest creation, the so-called Beetle GRC, ahead of its public debut which will be taking place this weekend, during the Red Bull Global Rallycross.

The brand new Volkswagen Beetle GRC is one hot ride as it has received high performance brakes, an upgraded suspension system, limited slip differentials, side scoops, aerodynamic side mirrors, a massive rear wing and it is now riding on 17-inch alloy wheels, wrapped in competition tires signed by Yokohama.

Another patently stupid and pointless exercise from VW. Either shut the face up and build exciting cars that are reliable and durable or stop with the concepts/exercises that purport to be a "with it" company. Piech and his management Gestapo need to go and it's too bad they can't get Mulally to run the operation.

Couple of quick questions...."why?",secondly, "is there a point to this car?" and finally..."who cares?"

I perceive this as a bad joke.

No one takes VW serious in racing. Literally no one. A very bad joke indeed.

I'm sure VAG is using this vehicle to both test component durability and as a marketing exercise.

Some of you are way to critical.

No. I'm keenly aware of the junk VW pushes out to dealers and how it DOES NOT LISTEN to what the dealers KNOW they need on the lot. The New New Beetle is a total sales dud and this and the approved for production Beetle Dune are not the products VW needs to reverse its sales implosion.

Matt-I partly agree with in regard to the Beetle. However as bad as the Beetles sales are the Golf and GTI are worse if you look at previous sales numbers. Further one of the biggest complaints about VW is their overly cautious and conservative styling along with cheap interior materials. This as well as the lack of decently priced CUV's and SUV's.
VW tries to push and nuture the GTI(which I happen to think is a well engineered car)with it's boxy styling and "origami" trim. VW has an opportunity to really nurture the Beetle as a special vehicle. They could, for example, offer a 4dr version. Have a better sportier suspension then the standard Golf with more power. Offer it in AWD as well as the Dune. They could actually replace this with the Golf R to take on the Subaru WRX and STI. They could make a speedster version. They could also finally be brave and make a Karman Ghia version of the Beetle. Perhaps if they could improve the quality as well as differentiating it more from the Golf and Jetta in terms of engine and suspension upgrades that it would be a better solution then just endorsing a "box".
