Is The 2015 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class Refresh LACKING Something The First-Gen CLS Had?
As we reported to you the other day, the very first shots of the newly revamped 2015 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class found their way online thanks to the three-pointed star. For us, as the originator of the four-door coupe phenomena, this is a big deal.

There's just one little thing I noticed the more I looked at the all-new set of photos. The CLS is lacking its truly unique look now.

2015 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class

For me, I see this as a problem. One of the biggest draws to the CLS was that it didn't look like a Mercedes. Now, to me, it looks like a stretched and blended CLA-Class and E-Class. If you look closely at the front grille and front valence on the standard car and the sport package equipped model, these two details appear to take a lot of creative license from the CLA and E.

Thankfully, its side profile is still dramatic in part due to the highly exaggerated rear fenders and sloping roofline, and its rear end remains unique due to its taillights.

BUT, the more I look at the refreshed CLS I still believe the original luster that appeared in the first-gen CLS has been lost in a big way. What say YOU? Am I onto something?

Both generations are designed so that drug dealers, pimps, ballers and rappers will love them. In the coupesedan field, the Audi A7 is the one with class followed next by the BMW 6GC. Mercedes design is for people who only have taste in their mouthes. Let the wagging begin...

Well Mr darringer if your kids and their friends weren't the ones buying the music from these rappers or buying the drugs from those drug dealers perhaps they wouldn't have the $$$ to buy those expensive cars. Just saying!

Don't worry, I think @mattdarringer's wife or girlfriend left him for one of those rappers or ballers he's always going on about.

She probably was over his "small" or "conservative" lifestyle and went for something "Big" and "Flashy" instead.

It's alright @mattdarringer, atleast you have class...

Hey Mat, why don't you tell us what you really drive ?
Don't give us you BS dream car, just the real one in your parking space.

While in a public restroom, Matt had the misfortune of urinating next to a black man. He peeked over and was forever ashamed of his own manhood, it was also then he swore to initiate a JIHAD against all the ballers, rappers, pimps, and especially that punk who unknowingly belittled him in the stall that day. Unbeknownst to everyone however, he also secretly fantasized and prayed that he be of comparable size to them someday.

This, my friends, is a testament to the origination of Matt's love/hate relationship with the physically endowed ballers/pimps/rappers etc.

If the fu*king car gets any more humpy looking, it will become a full circle.

It's always looked like it was inspired by Hyundai. Except from the back it looks like Toyota.

Yes, the current and upcoming CLS lacks the sleek, clean(er) look of the original. I do think the current/upcoming car does have much stronger road presence, though.

Mercedes are starting to look like half-sausages on wheels. Like an elongated VW Beetle or something. I still like them but... they need to curb the roundness before it really gets out of hand.

The CLS does look too much like other Mercedes for its price tag. That's the double-edged sword of making a car like the CLA, isn't it. On the one hand, you can say the CLA looks like the more expensive models and is therefore a good purchase for the associated prestige. On the other hand, you can say the CLS looks like the far less expensive CLA and is therefore not necessarily worth that much extra cost. But I think all of the German "big 3" suffer from that "same sausage, different size" issue.

It's actually something the Koreans are doing better. You're not going to confuse a Sonata with a Genesis. They look nothing alike.

The original monstrosity looked inspired by a chrysler or something, so maybe they should have never divorced. This new generation looks as unoriginal and bland and melted as, oh, EVERY other m-b sedan....

I owned a 2009 model and I assure you, it was a head turner and clearly a MB. Wasn't sure about the second generation but took a 2013 CLS550, lowered it and put 20" Vossen wheels on it. I assure you, its a looker. I'm up to the end of my lease and need to order now for December delivery. Looking at the pics you posted, I find the CLS 2015 looks too much like a CLA. I'm sure the guy spending $35k is thrilled that his car looks like a $100k car but I'm not willing to spend $100k on a car that looks like a $35k car. Seems MB thinks Audi and BMW are on to something with similar front ends on all their models. The new CLS 2015 even has a similar info screen like the CLA. The shift selector on a CLS is mounted on a steering column, just like my dad's 67 Chevy Impala, come on !! That belongs in a E class, but not the CLS. MB needs to ensure the CLS is a sportier version than the E class with a different front end and a dash that is a step towards the new S class, Then I'll spend the extra $20k versus an E class.

I'm not looking to spend $100k on a car that I need to explain. No no, its not a 335, its a 535, look, its a bit bigger !! the badge on the trunk even says 535 !! OR no no, its a A6 and not a A4, look its says so on the back. I'll tell you this, if you pull up behind a Vette with a 2014 CLS 63 AMG -S, I assure you the driver of the Vette wets his pants and quickly pulls over to middle lane to let you pass and he won't mess with you at the next red light. Could be kind of boring to own a CLS63 actually.

As for Audi, They all look the same, like their owners. The GTI a few years ago even had the front end grill of a A4. We all know the A4 is a just a Jetta with chrome and leather. The A6 is a Passat. I know, I know, the Jetta 2.0L engine is a Audi engine in the Jetta, not the other way around. Sure, what ever makes you sleep better. Of course, the Macan is a Tiguan with new sheet metal.. thats why you buy a VW... yea yea..
