OFFICIAL: The All-New 2015 Acura TLX Gets PRICED — Is This Acura's SAVIOR Or A FLOP Waiting To Happen?
Although we've been highly critical of Acura in recent years, we're only doing it out of love. They say when people stop telling you how to make things better, that's a bad place to be because it means they stopped caring. We do still care about Acura because it was a great brand and we want to see it succeed.

It seems a bit lost at the moment; however, there may be ONE product that gets this ship pointed back in the right direction. That, my friends, would be the TLX.

In a highly risky move, Acura has discontinued the TSX and TL in order to simply build this TLX. While we've poked around both the concept and production vehicles at this year's auto shows and found the TLX to be a bit of a snoozefest, according to some commenters here, this is the vehicle that has created a groundswell of excitement in recent months.

I am not buying it.

However, I will admit I am not right all the time. So, I want to ask YOU what you think and to place your bet right now: is the TLX going to be Acura's SAVIOR or is it just a FLOP in disguise? What say you, Spies?

**Today's announcement aggressively prices the TLX in at just under $31,000. Read the FULL statement below!

"We appreciate the patience of our customers who have waited for the incredible all-new TLX to come to market and to reward them for their patience we're offering the TLX Acura Advantage program, but of course the customers' primary reward is the incredible 2015 Acura TLX," said Mike Accavitti, senior vice president and general manager for the Acura division. "The TLX heralds a new era for the Acura brand and we are excited to begin the process of getting it in the hands of our current and new customers."

2015 Acura TLX

The all-new 2015 TLX was designed to deliver a unique and compelling blend of sports-sedan athleticism and premium luxury refinement, appealing to a broad cross-section of luxury sports-sedan customers with a wide range of powertrain and drivetrain options. The TLX lineup features three distinct model offerings that carry a long list of standard luxury comfort, convenience and safety features. All TLX models can be upgraded to the Technology Package and the V-6 models are available with the line-topping Advance Package.

The three model variations feature two Acura exclusive, high-output direct-injected i-VTEC® engines, two advanced transmissions and two unique dynamic handling systems.

The Acura TLX with a 2.4-liter 16-valve, 4-cylinder engine producing 206 horsepower3 mated to an all-new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission (8DCT) with torque converter. The 2.4-liter TLX has an MSRP of $30,995* and $35,025* with the Technology Package. For handling prowess, it features the latest iteration of Acura's Precision All-Wheel Steer (P-AWS).

The Acura TLX with a 3.5-liter 24-valve V-6 delivering 290-horsepower4 is mated to a new 9-speed automatic transmission (9AT) and will be available with both P-AWS and Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD®). The two-wheel-drive model with P-AWS has a MSRP of $35,220* and $39,250* for the Technology Package. The 3.5-liter TLX with Advance Package has a MSRP of $42,500*.
Sharing the same 3.5-liter dynamic powertrain as the two-wheel-drive model, the all-wheel drive TLX SH-AWD features a new hydraulically controlled version of Acura's acclaimed torque vectoring SH-AWD and will be available with the Technology Package for an MSRP of $41,450* and $44,700* for the Advance Package.

Super Handling Technology

The latest iterations of Acura super-handling technologies, P-AWS and SH-AWD, along with Agile Handling Assist (AHA), help make the TLX the most dynamically advanced Acura ever produced; quick and responsive in sporty driving, stable and sure-footed in emergency maneuvers, and calm and quiet during long-distance cruising.

The new P-AWS system was integrated into the fundamental chassis design from the earliest stages of development, allowing engineers to take full advantage of its independent left and right rear-wheel toe angle control to enhance handling precision, maneuverability and stability.

The next-generation SH-AWD system is 25 percent lighter and friction is substantially reduced. The new rear-drive unit is constantly overdriven by 2.7-percent (compared to 1.7 percent on the previous system), with a greater torque-vectoring effect across a broader spectrum of driving situations, further enhancing cornering capability at lower speeds and in tighter-radius corners.

All TLX models also feature the latest development of Acura's Integrated Dynamics System (IDS), which allows drivers to customize their driving experience through four selectable modes; ECON, Normal, Sport and Sport+. Depending on the setting, IDS will adjust power-steering effort, throttle response, transmission shift logic, HVAC system operation, active sound control and the control logic for either the P-AWS or SH-AWD systems. The new Sport+ mode, a first for Acura, unlocks the full performance potential of the TLX with the most aggressive settings in all areas.

Fuel Economy

The TLX equipped with the 2.4-liter engine has an EPA fuel-economy rating of 24/35/285 mpg city/highway/combined. The TLX two-wheel-drive with the 3.5-liter V-6 has an EPA fuel-economy rating of 21/34/2551 mpg (+1 city/+5 highway versus the outgoing two-wheel-drive 2014 TL). The TLX SH-AWD has an EPA fuel-economy rating of 21/31/255 (+3 city/+5 highway versus the outgoing 2014 TL SH-AWD).

Standard Features

Unlike other luxury vehicles in its class, the TLX offers a number of compelling features as standard equipment across the TLX lineup, including Jewel Eye™ LED headlights, Smart Entry and pushbutton ignition, rearview camera, Hill Start Assist and more.

Further, the TLX Tech and Advance trim levels add a host of available features, including a suite of safety and driver-assistive technologies, including the Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Low-Speed Follow and Blind Spot Indicator (BSI).

Design and Packaging

The TLX's lithe new exterior design features taut body surfaces, dynamically sculpted fender arches, and purposeful character lines. Its sporting appeal is further highlighted by its more compact sports-sedan proportions (3.8-inches shorter in overall length than the 2014 TL) and Acura's signature Jewel Eye™ LED headlights that are standard on all models. The spacious five-passenger interior of the TLX provides a high degree of refinement, luxury and technological sophistication while supporting an exhilarating driving experience.

Interior Features

An abundance of luxury features and technologies are available on the TLX, including heated and ventilated front seats, HomeLink®, Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink®, smart entry and pushbutton ignition keyless access system, Acura Navigation System with 3D view, and AcuraLink® Real-Time Traffic™ with Traffic Rerouting. A 7-inch On Demand Multi-Use Display™ (ODMD) touch screen, located in the center console, controls these and other features, and, with its contextual menus, displays relevant items while minimizing instrument panel clutter.

Also available on the TLX is the next-generation AcuraLink®, Acura's cloud-based connected car system, offering Acura owners a broad range of cloud-based and embedded convenience, connectivity and available security features. All TLX models also come equipped with Siri Eyes Free technology that, when paired with a compatible iPhone®, allows the driver to control functions using familiar voice commands. Additional standard and available luxury features include one-touch turn signals and power windows, power driver and front passenger seats, GPS-linked automatic climate control, Color Multi-Information Display (MID) with turn-by-turn guidance, LED accent lighting, HD Radio®, Pandora® and Aha™ integration and USB connectivity.

In keeping with Acura's commitment to delivering a world-class audio experience, the TLX can be equipped with a 455-watt, 10-speaker Acura/ELS Studio® Premium Audio System, engineered specifically for the TLX by legendary recording engineer Elliot Scheiner.

Development and Manufacturing

The 2015 TLX was designed, developed and engineered in the U.S. Production of the new TLX and its powertrain will take place at the company's state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Marysville, Ohio.6

It seems to look exactly like the 2014, 2011 and 2007 versions.

It's boring and unattractive. And it still has that goddamn beak. I saw the car in Detroit in person, and recently "disguised" here on the road in Ohio, and that beak ruins it. If not for the beak, it would be a regular car that looks like nothing too special. Better than an Accord? I don't know.. maybe a little...

At 45k for an AWD with some equipment, the car is probably priced fine, but I just wish it had some personality. It has none.

Does every post of yours have to be something with swearing in it. F- this on another blog I seen, and this one now. I thought we dumped people from Autospies for this. Get with the program.

Despite whatever the opinions are on this site, or any other site for enthusiasts, the fact remains that there is a very viable market for the TLX. Acura is essentially offering two cars in one model and its main competition will be the likes of the Lexus IS and ES. The IS and ES are easily Lexus's #3 and #2 cars, behind the juggernaut RX. And, actually, the Lexus ES is a comfortable #3 in it segment behind the 3 Series and C-Class and I believe the IS is #4. And the TLX is offering a very appealing alernative to those cars, especially in SH-AWD trim.

So as many pundits want to blast this car for conservative looks or lack of manual transmission or keeping with FWD, there is a large market out there for the car.

So, basically by your count this car will likely place in fifth place, assuming all goes well? That's not a great place to be.

Fifth place in an extremely competitive and crowded segment isn't such a bad thing. Ranking behind the unstoppable 3/4 Series and C-Class is almost a given, especially with the new C coming. Fifth place, were that to happen, would mean that the TLX would rank above the A4/S4, ATS, and Q50. But, let's see how it all pans out.

I would just ignore Agent00R-That is part of the anti-Acura/Honda bias on this site, and while I do believe Acura has a lot of room for improvement (as do many other automakers), I do think the TLX is Acura's best sedan offering in years.

cidflekkencidflekken - 7/4/2014 7:48:14 PM

Well, yes and no. 00R has a very valid point and concern (if it's true concern). Acura has shot itself in the foot so many times in the past decade, it is a bit surprising that they are still alive. Currently, if not for its SUV lineup, it would be fighting with Lincoln and Volvo for basement honors. That being said, I think that's one aspect that many seem to be forgetting. The brand is still recognized as a premium/second-tier brand as evidenced by the incredibly strong sales of the MDX and RDX, beak and all. So, done right, Acura can regain traction on the sedan front beginning with the TLX. Though the TLX may not offer what enthusiasts look for, it's offering exactly what the majority of buyers are looking for. So, we'll see.

This product will sell extremely well for Acura. It's a much more elegant yet aggressive design like the 3G TL, and will be priced aggressively.

It is priced well but the reality is this car has ZERO image or curb appeal.

Likely it will get a lot of value buyers but the folks looking to one up the Joneses won't give this car the time of day.

But you know what I don't hear anymore? Acura owners GLOATING about their cars and how great they are. The magic has worn off.

Agent 00R-Give me a break...weren't you the one that lauded the new Murano as the best of the NY Auto Show. In my opinion, that vehicle was way overdone like the 4G Acura TL. I prefer simpler more elegant designs than over the top like the new Murano.

Flop. Still out of touch with the segment, but will do fairly well with aggressive pricing and packages with the drones who perceive Acura to be a premium label, but will not pay to buy the real performers in the segment.

MattDarringerMattDarringer - 7/4/2014 9:57:40 AM

I predict a flop. It will not need to be as heavily incentivized as the TL it replaces (steep discounts) but it will need incentives because it does not have the gotta have styling of the TL that preceded the outgoing model.

Let me just add that all this talk of "Acura losing its mojo" or whatever may not be as true as many of you would like it to be. Remember, the RDX was pretty much down and out, selling miserably until its redesign. It lost its edginess and the SH-AWD, but it's been a leader in its segment since its complete redesign. Look at the MDX. Criticized for losing its aggressive styling, but has been leading all of its direct competitors outside of the Lexus RX. So, people are still drawn to the brand, for the right product offering.

WglennWglenn - 7/4/2014 9:19:49 PM

I think it will do decently, but it will be a challenge to match combined sales of two previous models (TL and TSX). I'm taking a wild guess that it is priced aggressively because Acura will drop the ILX in a year or two and offer a new model slotted between this and the RLX, which is priced at nearly $49K. So I think this will become the base Acura in 1-2 years and a new model will be added and priced at around $37-38K, to match the Lexus ES/Mercedes C class.

With so many choices why buy an ugly car? I don't care how
"good" it is; it won't sell to anyone who loves their car.

When Jaguar and Land Rover can sell cars for decades that are unreliable but beautiful...
Acura.. Know thy customer!

When the reviews came out about the new TL in 2009 and the sales numbers fell off a cliff it should have given you all the market analysis you could need. Then you followed with designs for the other models driving everything off the same
cliff.

As a 2008 Acura TL owner I bought new I didn't even go drive the new awd TL although I wanted awd. I bought a BMW 2014 435xi. I was even a hardcore Honda customer owning a CRX, Accord
and a TL as previous vehicles.

I saw a new "Accord Sport" the other day and it perked some interest. But I am looking for a bit more
Luxury and performance as well as awd. Acura missed the mark
so they lost a customer.

Sure the BMW is a little more money but it has free maintenance for 50k miles. Makes the decision easier and helps level the field. The BMW hauls but, has huge brakes and handles like a race car even though its a luxury brand. Is so much comfortable. I don't know now if I would ever go back to Acura. Quite a different sales experience as well.

Good luck Honda. You are like an EX- GF that didn't work out for the long run. Doesn't mean I don't still have fond memories...
