BREAKING! Porsche's MOVING ON From The 911, Working On A V8 Supercar
Breaking tonight from the UK is news about Porsche's future product plans that has not been heard anywhere else previously. According to an article running across the pond, the Porsche 911 has essentially reached its full potential and the company has started work on something else much more intriguing.

That would be a mid-engined, V8 supercar that will go up against the likes of the Ferrari 458 Italia.

To say this is HUGE news would be a tremendous understatement. That's because the current iteration of the 911 Turbo and Turbo S are tremendous competition in the supercar class as they stand.

But it seems from what we're reading tonight that Porsche has really reached its limit and is seeking an all-new chassis to compete at the highest level. Considering what we've experienced behind the wheel of the latest Cayman, we're over the moon to hear about a potential mid-engined V8 with 600 horsepower.

The as yet unnamed flagship model – thought to be carrying the development tag ‘988’ – finally addresses the long-held concern of many Porsche engineers: that the company cannot adequately compete with eight-cylinder Ferraris with the classic six-cylinder engine used by the 911...

...The recent engine failures that stopped production of the new 3.8-litre 911 GT3 are being seen by some in the company as proof that the flat six has reached the end of its natural life in terms of increasing its cubic capacity...

So Porsche finally realizes that the engine in the 911 is in the wrong place and is moving on? Hilarious. So now they will take the Lamborghini Aventador platform, throw in a Porsche flat 8 and put the hideous 911 caricature styling over the outside and call it a day.

This just in: People like the 911, and will buy any Porsche that looks like it.

This just in: That makes a mockery of the 911.

Porsche 911:
The most successful sports car in the world. Even with a lazy design, and its engine in the wrong place.-

If the 911 was close to looking as good as the Auto Car photo above I would lust after a 911. The photo reminds me a little of the 904.That was the prettiest car Porsche ever made.

I think it's a great idea! The rendering above looks awesome, and if Porsche were able to design something close to this it would hit a home run IMHO. My guess would be Porsche takes the Huracan/R8 Platform, does its magic on it, and voilá: The New Porsche 988!

I doubt this will be the Huracan/R8 Platform. Porsche could either lengthen the Cayman/Boxster platform (the Cayman/Boxster already ride on a longer wheelbase than the current 911)or cost reduce the 918 platform.

Only took them 50 years to figure out that the engine was in the wrong place. The 911 was always a compromise. They could have developed the 904 into a much better sports car for public sales and sold the 911 as the compromise it is to the young family man with kids as it was intended to be. I'm not saying the 911 didn't work or that it wasn't the most wonderful development job of a bad design that ever existed. I'm certainly not suggesting it hasn't been a marketing success. I am saying that we will never know how successful Porsche could have been had they started with a good design with the engine in a better location. How many millions of dollars did they spend and how many years did they tie up trying to engineer around an inherent problem.
I not a fan of Porsche and it's not because of what they are but rather because of what they could have been. How great would the Cayman be if they had it as the headliner and put 1/2 the time & money & 911 horsepower in it. It might actually be worth what they want for a 911.

They killed the 914-6 because it was better handling and cost less. Buyers wanted the 914-6 and sales of the 911 collapsed, so Porsche killed the 914-6 which was built at a VW/Audi plant rather than a Porsche plant.

Finally! Tired (and tiring) 911 ditched and new platform/shell/engine will emerge.

Those are some wicked KIA headlights. Porsche is going to get sued for using their own designs.
