STUD OR DUD? Baby Porsche 718 Roadster Rendered And Detailed

Get set for the £32,000 Porsche: the new lightweight, back-to-basics Porsche 718 roadster.

The two-seater will be based on a cut-down version of the current Boxster, but with all-new, four-cylinder firepower and a no-frills approach to equipment. Think Porsche’s MX-5, and get very excited indeed purists.

Named 718 as a nod to the four-cylinder racing car (built from 1957 -’62 and raced by Graham Hill among others), the 2016 version shares its wheelbase with the Boxster but features shorter overhangs, a lighter body-in-white and bespoke body panels. With a 1190kg weight target, the 718 could weigh 120kg less than its roadster brother.

It's cute. I bet my girlfriend would like one in blue.

It will probably cost $50K when it needs to cost $29K. A Porsche 922T with the GTI's 2.0T in mid-engined form would be the BY FAR better choice. Porsche could probably increase sales 50% with a sports car strategy from $29-50K

922T mid-engined 2.0T starting at $29K
944 Porsche "BRZ" with 2.0T starting at $33K
944T the above with a higher output version of the 2.0T starting at $37K
966 the above with a lengthened wheelbase a usable rear seat 2.0T starring at $37K
966T the above with higher output 2.0T starting at $42K

Mustang should cost around below 10k, as the American engineering is pure trash. I actually don't understand why Boss costs almost close to an M3, when it should cost around below 15k.

@ JDMUSMuscle

All BMWs should cost about $10,000 less, including the cars with the M badge.

Agree. Could be $50K. Porsche should aim at a base below $40. In this economy, you either $$$ and you are shopping 911's, or you drive a clapped out MX5, like me. The market in between is shrinking.

Porsche's mistake is thinking it is Ferrari when it really should have some affordable sports cars.

Ford's mistake is not letting the new Mercury (Lincoln) go, and thinking they are an American BMW when in reality all they make is Toyota competitors (Look at all the Ford vehicles on the website, it's pretty hilarious)

And Porsche is in most cases, recognized as a status symbol. A true enthusiasts and the rich people's car.

Ford Mustang on the other hand, is always a female secretary's car (aka chick car) or a poor man's BMW 2 series (No, not even close to an M3)

Many Americans call Porsche or Audi just a rebadged VW. This basically comes from "jealousy" towards Germany. The truth is, it is obvious that the Americans are jealous of Germany like that because Germany is simply the richest and the most respected country of all developed countries.

But the problem is that many ignorant Americans still believe the world is jealous of America, when no one is jealous of 'Murica, the country with hundreds of bankrupting cities + no respected brands + super high unemployment rate. Anyone educated would know America is nothing but an old old trend.

But some third world people are indeed jealous of America still.

Matt, I don't understand the comment? Lowest cost Ferrari starts at $200K, Porsche at $50K. $50K+ sports cars are now a dime a dozen (BMW, Jaguar, Audi, MBZ, Alfa, Ford, Chevrolet). Are they all trying to be Ferrari?

The problem that no one wants to admit, is that the market for 2 seat and near 2 seat sports cars is limited. Whoring yourself out at the bottom end will sell more cars while cutting into the profits needed for R&D and product line growth. Let's hope they also stick to mid-engine for the superior handling and driving dynamics.

I'm happy that you going ahead on the purchase of a new baby Boxster...good luck with that. I'm sure you and the rest of the pony tail sporting guys at the salon will enjoy racing Miatas together.

Other than the 918 what Porsche costs over 200 Grand to buy? Answer NONE. The most expensive Panamera Turbo S costs around $190,000. Ferrari's start at $200,000. Porsche is clearly not saying it is Ferrari in terms of price. However than can get away with $40,000 or $50,000 starting price on any car that they sell. I expect that the model 718 will sell in the mid 40 grand range. Porsche will sell every one of them.
