SPIED: Mercedes-Benz's C-Class Convertible SPOTTED, Finally Competition For The 4-Series Drop Top?

SPIED: Mercedes-Benz's C-Class Convertible SPOTTED, Finally Competition For The 4-Series Drop Top?
For years, Mercedes-Benz has built convertibles. There's just one problem: it never made a proper car to go up against the likes of the BMW 3-Series and the more recent Audi A5 convertible.

The E-Class cabriolet, for example, starts at about $60,000. The A5 and 4-Series start at about $44,000 and $48,000, respectively.

Now it seems the three-pointed star has wised up. That's because it's working on a C-Class cabriolet. Obviously, by doing so, this will bring down the cost to get into a Mercedes four-seater convertible and allow the company to compete more aggressively.

Regarding the spy shots, as you can see the car is buttoned up pretty tight. One thing that remains a mystery is if it will be a hard-top convertible or a soft top. We're guessing cloth so Mercedes can keep costs and weight down.

I thought most of the preliminary information is that it will be a hard top convertible. But Benz can't make it look like a styling mess like the IS convertible hard top.

I have heard both.

Personally, I think it'll be cloth.

So is the E-class convertible being discontinued then? Or being redesigned and pushed upmarket in price? It wouldn't make much sense for a C and E convertible, both soft tops, both based on C architecture, to coexist at the current E price and expected C price. They're basically the same car, and the prices would overlap, only the slightly cheaper C would actually be nicer and newer.

If anything they'd probably push the E-Class convertible up to be more on par against the 6-Series convertible. As it stood the E-Class convertible was trying to do double duty.

I agree. The E-class coupe will likely no longer be based on the C-Class platform and will be moved upmarket. Being that the new C-Class is upping the ante in its class, it would make sense and with the new S-Class sedan and coupe being so positively received, there's a huge gap now between the E and S offerings.
