Jeep Says 2018 Wrangler Will Be A Land Rover Rival - Do You Buy It?
With an all-new Wrangler announced for 2018, many of the brand's fans have been expressing their concerns over the company's plans. Following the debut of the Fiat-based Renegade, Jeep officials have been stressing the fact the Wrangler will be based on independent architecture.

It'll boast a sophisticated drivetrain and off-road capabilities equal to those of the current generation. Jeep expects the Wrangler to be so good, in fact, that it'll provoke a direct rival from Land Rover.

Well, maybe it'll be comparably overpriced. When I was car shopping a year ago, I looked at Wranglers. The one Wrangler Unlimited that I though might be worth driving had a sticker of $45000. At this rate the 2018 ones might break $50000 at which point, sure, may as well lease a Discovery.

I can't fathom the margins that Jeep has on Wranglers. A car that is fairly bare-bones with technology as old as Sylvester Stallone, and they're charging what they're charging. My dad's new 4-Runner Limited, which is 10x the car, was just over $40k.

At 45k you have to be looking at a Unlimited Rubicon, which off-road is far more sophisticated than your dad's 4Runner.

Take the 4Runner off road and watch it break!

Ummm 4-Runners don't break off-road. Jeeps, 4-Runners, FJs, XTerras, Land Rovers - they all perform well. The Jeeps and Land Rovers have all sorts of other failures but if you're focused on "can they get from point A to point B" then you're good in any.

And yes it was an Unlimited MOAB or something similarly special, hence the sticker. But the 4-Runner isn't just about climbing rocks. It has far more cargo room, it is far more comfortable, has more luxury features to boot, can do a lot of what the Jeep can do off-road practically speaking so unless you're an off-road enthusiast (then get the TRD Pro version anyway) it's a non-issue, and is a Toyota truck so it'll outlast nearly anything on the road.

I didn't purchase either, but the Wrangler in any trim is a fantastic rip-off these days.

How?

It has one of the best resell values on the market

It’s a true specialty vehicle, it’s only true competition in North America is the FJ cruiser which is gone at the end of the model year.

It’s built so you can take the roof and doors off, even with power windows and door locks and even fold the windshield down.

It’s engineered so you wash the interior out with hose.

You can get it with Bluetooth, nav, leather, heated seats and a hard drive music system.

What people fail to understand about the Wrangler It is a true high performance vehicle, as much as a Porsche Cayman. Its engineering is a for off-road and the not the track. In Rubicon form it adds such exotic items as electrically disconnecting sway bars, front and rear differential lockers, and high performance transfer case and many other off-road features

I can tell you this from my personal experience as an off-road enthusiast, in the back country the difference between the 4Runner and Wrangler is huge. Even the FJ can’t go place the Jeep can, and yes I’ve driven them all.

So when you say the Wrangler is a rip off, I don’t know what you’re talking about

Great article but not sure why they chose to picture the Evoque that is the worst possible comparison.

The Wrangler is already the better vehicle off road.

Wrangler has become grossly expensive to purchase and very expensive to run. It has miserable fuel mileage. Additionally, the ride is simply primitive and punishing.

So you don't get Jeeps.

If the wrangler depreciated like a typical vehicle, I agree it is a ripoff. The fact is, it has better resale than almost any vehicle out there. From purchase to sale, you will be hard pressed to find a better deal. It's a punishing ride but they have tried hard to keep the heritage that made jeep popular. It is what it is and you are either a fan or not. You can't argue the numbers though. Go search a 10 year old wrangler an your jaw will hit the floor at what they sell for.
