VIDEO: Does Smart's MARKETING Video Make YOU Feel Safer About Getting Behind The Wheel Of Its SMALL Cars?
If you're a small car builder operating in the new market, you have to admit it's a tough place to be. That's because everyone wants bigger cars with more space. And, of course, safety plays a big part in that.

The thinking is pretty simple: the bigger ride you're in, the more safe you are.

smart fortwo & forfour

It's funny because in the rare instances I hang out with my father and we run into a Smart car he says the same thing every single time, like clock work: "I'd never want to get in an accident driving one of those."

Though Smart can prove the vehicle's structure remains intact, does this MARKETING clip do anything to sway your opinion of the vehicle's safety?

Just some food for thought. Check out the crash test clip put together by the U.K.'s Fifth Gear below the Smart marketing video. It's a bit dated but perhaps it'll get you thinking.

Real-life safety" philosophy: Crash test against S-Class: new smart fortwo offers comprehensive occupant protection

The new smart fortwo meets high safety standards, some of which far exceed legal requirements. This was demonstrated by a recent in-house offset crash against a Mercedes-Benz S-Class. As the smaller and lighter vehicle in the collision and at an impact speed of 50 km/h with 50 percent overlap, the smart offers its two passengers an intact occupant space and excellent chances of survival. All in all, the new smart fortwo has undergone the same development programme as, for example, the new Mercedes-Benz S- or C-Class. Daimler's 75 years of safety expertise and smart's 21 years of expertise in building small cars have gone into the safety concept of the new smart generation.

From the standpoint of physics the video is very misleading. First of all they call the laboratory crash a "real world" illustration...NOT! In the real world, if a Smart hit another car, the mass of the larger car would transfer motion into the Smart causing it literally of bounce off and most likely into the path of other cars.

While no vehicle can guarantee against the inevitable, the Smart is a piece of overpriced road poop that needs to stay in Europe where only its size makes sense in crowded cities.

The commercial will appeal to Smart's demographic in the USA: middle-aged divorced women and middle-aged DINKs (dual income no kids).

The only thing the video does is make me think how fu*king stupid Smart cars look.

@Dexter1 I agree. When you realize that a Toyota Corolla gets virtually the same city MPG and better highway MPG for about the same price, the Smart makes no sense. Now factor in the Toyota's better utility and infinitely better quality and reliability and the Smart looks even more DUMB.

@CarCtazedinCali Absolutely true! The Fiat 500 is actually a car for one and for two it has better reliability.

@CarCrazedinCali your bloviating from some imaginary moral perch is most amusing even as you blithely choose to ignore facts. The facts are however that the Fiat 500 is not a deathtrap any more so than any other vehicle of its mass would be versus the truck known as the Mercedes S.
