Volkswagen's 395HP Golf R400 Nearing Reality- Who Should Be Shaking In Their Boots Right Now?
We may just be living in the greatest era for hot hatchbacks. Obviously there’s the currently on sale Ford Focus ST and Volkswagen Golf GTI, but both of those automakers have even more extreme hot hatches in the works. There’s the Ford Focus RS, due in 2016. And now we’re receiving a report claiming that VW will build a production version of its Golf R400 concept. It will be even more hard-core than the new Golf R.

Anyone who buys this without an extended warranty should live in extreme fear. With the propensity of the 2.0T to self-destruct, I don't hold much hope for this over-stressed monster motor having much long-term durability. Factor in the inevitably stupid pricing and it becomes even more unpalatable.

My neighbor leased a VW for his business. It's been nothing but nightmare... Endless trips to the dealer. He's just glad repairs are covered by warranty. He got it because he thought diesel would allow him to refuel less frequently. But the time spent at the dealer made this the last VW purchase he'll ever make.

Indeed and it's getting out that VW quality is abysmal. The TDI has its glitches in addition to the myriad of issues VWs have in general. But hey, they are going to buy Fiat and that will fix everything.

as opposed to the poorer sucker who buys the Audi RS version?

I'm going to wait see the sticker price before I pass judgment. I would have no problem buying a 2.0l that puts out 400 hp, people have been building them for nearly two decades.

I do have a problem with VW's dubious build quality and outrageous pricing.

For some reason, I can not see this hitting the market for less than $40,000.

A fully optioned GTI can hit $42K in the USA and we have two such turds in our manifest. Once they arrive they will gather dust on the lot. I would not be surprised if this crap storm started at $40K and went to $60K.

Base GTIs sell fast.

If this were $30K base it would be a runaway hit.

VW is never coherent in pricing.

Shaking in their boots for WHAT REASON?
Even if they actually make the car - how many are they going to make? There are only so many nitwits with the kind of money that will be required to be able to purchase - AND REPAIR the car.
Halo cars are nice - and VW/AUDI has lots of them - yet it has yet to increase sales and market share in the USA for VW -has it?
Adding another time bomb that you hardly get to drive between service calls is not going to help it any.
