Also, in the latest Car and Driver (they have a relatively realistic phop) they said that the V8 R8 might start at only 80,000 and the V10 version at 120,000. This makes the R8 an even better buy than ever.

That car is stunning. Just what Audi needs--a halo car at the $100k price point. Audi's collaboration with Lamborghini makes this car even more desirable. With this and the latest upcoming products, Audi is poised to become a serious threat in the US. BMW and Lexus won't know what hit them.

It won't have a limited production run as in the number of years. But like all 80k+ sports cars it won't be sold in big numbers.

And it will have more performance than the cars tha Will mentioned.

I agree that Audi need this car in their line-up. In the never ending battle with BMW, Merc, and Lexus fans, It is one area where they will be competing from the word go, rather than playing catch up. None of the other brands have cars designed to acheive the same thing..

HOWEVER.. I don't much like the way this looks. I'm sure the detailing will be typically germanic (which I usually like) but the front end seems really narrow, and the rear end looks quite disproportionate.

Would it be fair to say that if this get's a V10 it will basically be a "Lambourghini Lite".

And I might also like this car because of reason A) below, I might also dis-like it because of reason B)

A) BMW will see this and want a piece of the 100k midengined sportscar market - get its finger out and build an M10/Z10/M1.

B) BMW will decide there is too much competition in this segment and decide not to build it, as it's market share would not be big enough to warrant paying for a project like this - which is what has stopped them previously.

This car looks and sounds incredible. Did you catch the attached video? Anyone know if Audi is offering this with DSG? or 6 speed manual? This car is quickly racing to #1 on my short list.

80k is not 911 numbers in less you are talking about a base car and from the numbers the R8 should be a faster but a tiffrent car

TDI Would be incredible. Almost too much! I would be on that in a heartbeat. Have you heard how quiet the R10 is? Its barely audible. Do you think B&O is working on the sound system?

Not that it's important but I think this might have a "real" back set also. It's 10" longer than the Gaillardo.

I wonder how it will compare to the 911 C4S? That's on my short list too. The only thing I dislike about it is that it so closely resembles the base 911 model, other than its width and the tail pipes. For the premium, I would like it to stand out a bit more. It's just a minor complaint though. Outstanding vehicle.

The RS4 is already faster than the cars that Will mentioned. The R8 will be much lighter than the RS4. It will clear 0-60 in four seconds flat or quicker.

Yes, the R8 is getting talked about so much for a reason. That reason is because it will bring a new supercar into the picture for the Germans, but most importantly it will give Audi a car with truly phenomenal performance at a price that undercuts similar competitors (in terms of acceleration, braking, handling and all-around performance) by a HUGE margin.

Yes, the same can be said for the Corvette Z06 which can outrun a Ferrari F430 and a Porsche 911 Turbo both cars that cost almost twice or three times as much a the Corvette. The Corvette suffers from poor quality, materials, etc...

The Audi will NOT suffer from poor materials quality, ergonomics or layout.

It will feature two hugely potent engines. There will be a V8 with 425 horsepower courtesy of the RS4 which will be very very fast. The RS4 is already clocked at 0-60 in as low as 4.3 seconds and this is a car that seats 5, has four doors and weighs MORE than a BMW M6.

The R8 will be a 2 seater, 2 door car made strictly out of aluminum and other light-weight materials.

Now this is with the V8. The V10 will be in the territory of 500 horsepower, but will cost around $120,000. Performance wise it might be quicker still than a Porsche 911 Turbo and about 10-15K cheaper.

Logical, I knew you would finally understand the importance of the R8 and the reason why it is being talked about so much. It truly is a hallmark car for Audi and it will be a price bargain for sure.

It will be much faster than a BMW M5 or M6 (straight-line & track). The V10 might be as fast or faster than a 911 Turbo. All while borrowing its roots and looks from the Lamborghini Gallardo and having the usual flawless Audi interior quality.

Quite the car at quite the price if you ask me.

The R8 425 horsepower V8 definetely won't be faster than the Gallardo. If Audi were to make the R8 faster than the Gallardo, nobody would pay an extra $80-90K for the Gallardo over the R8.

Now the R8 with V10 is an entirely different story. That car will be capable of I'm going to say around 3.6-3.8 0-60 times and quarter miles in the mid to upper 11 second range.

Audi, this is your official welcome into exotic sports-car territory and it is going to be a great one with a halo car that is going to sky-rocket Audi's image in both the United States and abroad (the latter is already extremely high and on par with BMW and MB)

An R8 for almost the same price as an RS4? I don't know about that. I'll believe it when I see it.

Well the RS4 does start out at 66,000. 80k is the lowest number than I have heard mentioned for the R8.

R8 will be more in the price range of $85-100K for the V8 and $115-125K for the V10 version

For sure efoxS4. For that kind of money, BMW will only sell the 6 series more weight, less power, and flame surfacing styling.

A lot of the "price cutting" is taking the bull of the badge. Most estimates that I have heard put the R8 closer to 100k than 80.

I'm sure it'll start in the high 80's or low 90's. Audi realizes the importance of pricing this thing right.

That is one good looking beast and if as Motor Trend reports, the V8 might list for "only" around 80k, it would be a steal. I doubt however that it would list for that low a figure as it's performance and looks alone would demand at least a 100k. Also, the vulchers....er, dealers would gouge the consumer to no end, at least in the first year or so of production.

Nevertheless, well done Audi. This car should do A LOT to boost their image.

Furthermore, if they do price the V8 version in the 80k ballpark, I have hopes that the Lexus LF-A (also a V8) would be priced relatively similarly. That the Nissan GT-R is to be priced below 80k gives further support to this wish :-)
