If these are the salvation models for the Amercian Car companies, they're screwed
The future of General Motors, Ford, the Chrysler Group and the men and women who work for them hinges on these new models.

The Silverado full-size pickup is GM's best-selling vehicle, generating billions of dollars annually. The all-new model that goes on sale this fall faces tough competition, high gas prices and uncertainty about demand for big trucks. GM has responded to those challenges with improved fuel economy, new features and assembly plants primed to build nearly a million Silverados and GMC Sierras a year.

The Toyota Camry is going to be annihilated by the new Honda Accord. I think the new Altima is going to be a major competitor now too.

Courtstone - Toyota Camry is not going to be annihilated the best the Accord will do is win, if it even does, by 10000 or so vehicles. BTW Since this is about American manufacturers I will talk about that. I think that the American manufacturers need win to win the trust of the public again because that is the problem. They also need to offer the public more premium features in their everyday cars. Cut costs to be profitable.

the only reason the camry out sells the accord is because toyota does fleet sales. you will never see an accord, or any honda for that matter as a rental. the accord is the #1 seller to actual households. this is also one of the reasons hondas hold their value so well

What's the point of this headline? Did any actual thought or analysis go into it?

If market response to GM's large SUVs is any indication, the new pickups should do well. The Edge is light-years ahead of the Explorer in the midsize SUV market, and the early reports on GM's larger crossovers sounds strong, according to various websites. Finally, it's obviously a bit early to condemn the new Chrysler minivans, but, heck, they invented the genre.

Nope, the Corolla is not the number one seller in the United States. On Wikipedia it says, "In 1997, the Corolla became the best selling nameplate in the world". Also on Wikipedia, it says, "The most popular variant of the F-Series is the F-150. It has been the best-selling vehicle in the world for 23 years and the best-selling truck in the United States for 28 years"
So There! HA!

Nameplate means that it dosen't have to be the same car. It could be a different car, in a different country, but be called Corolla. So the actual MODEL that has sold the most in the world is the F-150.

It's a nice looking truck. I don't know why the they chose that front grill as the brand signature. It looks okey on their new sedan, but I am sorry it doesn't inspire any one that I know who is a Ford's die hard.

On a different topic...
Is it me or any one else here notice the Nissan maxima looks like an Accord from far away?
Just my opinion, please don't throw the book at me.

4cked up Americans think if a product is a bestseller in America it is automatically a bestseller in the whole world. Wake up and smell the coffee. The best selling nameplate in the world has to be the Corolla. The F-series is sold only in America..........

Guys even though the Corolla can be different cars in different countries, the basics are the same. It is still the small compact that Toyota offers and it is pretty much the same segment that the Corolla is competing with.
For Example:

In the US Corolla's Competitors:
Civic
Focus
Cobalt
Rabbit

In Europe
Civic
Focus
Golf
Whatever Opel/GM equivalence

In Asia:
Civic/City
Focus/or the other small Ford Compact

So Corolla is still a Corolla no matter where you go, just add a little local cultural flavor that's all.

the 1980 corolla is nothing like the 2004 corolla, is it!
it has the same name but it is not the same car.
when it says name plate, it means more cars have carried the corolla name than any other since it was introduced. it does not mean the toyota corolla is the best selling single model in the world ever. to be the best selling model ever, it has to have the same basic design. the 1966 corolla does not have same basic design as the 2006 corolla.
the f-150 currently sells more per year than any other vehicle.
the vw beetle has sold the most of a car with the same basic design, at 21000000.
the corolla is not the best selling car in the us, or the world.
will, i promise you, you are wrong.

no, but the point is the current one sold the most in the us (or world maybe) THIS YEAR.
that was whant mstanqpny was saying.
the corolla hasn't sold more this year than the f-150.
the corolla name plate has been on the most cars, but the corolla car itself hasn't, as the model changes every 6 years.
i understand what you are trying to say, but your wording is a bit wrong.
the corolla name is the most popular of any car (that is quite an achievement).
toyota has sold a lot of them.

Rupert: I know for sure the F-150 is the best selling vehicle in THE UNITED STATES for the LAST 23 YEARS. The Corolla does not sell in huge amounts here. In terms of the entire world, I don't know what CURRENTLY is the best seller. If you type in Google :" Best Selling Vehicle in the World", you get tons of F-150 articles. Including:
http://www.canadiandriver.com/articles/cml/04f-150.htm
helpful page:
http://www.edmunds.com/40thanniversary/index.html

So it seems the Corolla has the all-time record under different bodys but still named Corolla, but the F-150 is the current best-selling, and has been for 23 years.
...
Oh, I think I found some sales numbers:
Toyota Corolla: over 30,000,000 in nine generations up to 2005
Ford F-150: over 29,000,000 in eleven generations.
So at this rate.......hmmm.....

ok what ever! But the F-150 is still selling well and could overtake the corrola.

As for my name, i wanted it to be mustangpony2007, but i shotened it to m-stang-pny-07, or mstangpny07. I think you are mis-spelling it with a "q" it is a "g".

The Corolla isn't prestigious because the product isn't good. It may be cheap and be around forever, but it's a bad product.

I drive a Chrysler 300, everybody loves the car because of the looks, but looks are only skin deep. It is a terrible car, terrible ride, very stiff and bumpy, the transmission bangs into 2nd gear, I’m always on edge driving it, it is difficult to see out the rear and side windows, no cornering lamps, (standard on Mercury Grand Marquis) the 2.7L engine is a joke, it has good low end acceleration, but bogs down when upshifted, and it can’t climb hills on the interstate especially if you have items in the trunk, so much for small engines, give me a V8, they are safer, and quieter. I know you guys are going to say that a stiffer ride is better for handling, guess again, why then does my Grand Marquis handle better than my 300? On the Mercury, you feel the road, as she glides through the curves. The Chrysler, you constantly over steer and under steer. Also, the rear drive on the 300 feels very artificial with the traction control, my advice, order a 300 without traction control, I’m a sophisticated driver and can do without that electronic junk. Who cares what the insurance company thinks about so called safety options.

The reason the Lincoln Continental didn't do well is that the car was just a stretched Taurus with a nicer grill. It may not have shared the same platform, but this is how many perceived the Continental, hence its retirement from the line. So the question is does Ford really want to revisit this recent failure with that junk they want to replace the Town Car with?

The executives look at shrinking market share the wrong way, when sales fall, they regroup by cutting cost and building a cheaper car, throw the public a bone and give them AWD, big deal. Wouldn't it be better to just keep building a better car?

Here is an idea, how about giving the Town Car a Diesel option and refine the transmission to say a 7 speed Auto to increase mileage. Put in a center console with a elegant wood grain shifter and leather boot, keep refining the car, and update the skin, headlights and tail lights.

Get marketing to promote the car better. A car the can fit business executives and huge trunk for their luggage and gets 30MPG would be a big hit.

What do we get instead, a stretched Ford 500 with an underpowered engine. Does that inspire you? Junk like this looses its trade in value by half within a week. Keep trying Ford. The big idea eludes you. People know junk when they see it, no matter how many sugar coated commercials you place on TV.
