Did YOU See What WE Saw? Now That Porsche AXED The V6 Cayenne Will You Get A Macan OR Look Elsewhere?
You know, I do my damndest to keep on top of the latest, breaking automotive news but on some days it's nearly impossible. Although I work hard, I slip up now and then.

So when I saw Porsche's press release that detailed the 2015 model year Cayenne, I was surprised to see that the base Cayenne — the one with the 300 horsepower six-cylinder — has been axed from the lineup. Obviously given how close the all-new Macan and base Cayenne were priced this now clears up some space to differentiate both nameplates.

2015 Porsche Cayenne

**The Macan S starts at $49,900 and the least expensive Cayennes are now the diesel model starting at $61,700 or the Cayenne S starting at $74,100.

Of course this means if you've had a hankering for that Cayenne and wanted to do it on the cheap you better RUN to your local Porsche dealer and try to snag a 2014 model year product before they're all sold out of inventories.

This situation makes us wonder: Considering the Macan is a smaller sport-utility vehicle and we know how much Americans like space, will this have YOU looking elsewhere instead of jumping into a base V6 Cayenne? Has Porsche been wise with its strategy or is it too risky?

What say you, Spies?

The Macan is cannibalizing sales from the Cayenne, so axing the least desirable Cayenne makes sense. Porsche either aimed wrong with the Macan given that it's causing the sales of the Cayenne to take on a chill or it did not recognize that the Cayenne needed to be replaced on the heels of the Macan with a repositioned new Cayenne.

You'll be surprised at what people will do to have a Porsche in their driveway to keep up with the Joneses.

@Agent00R be that as it may the X5 an the ML butcher the Cayenne for sales.

Do people actually buy a Porsche vehicle for the "space"?

If they actually bought a vehicle for the space - there are LOTS of high end SUV's that have plenty of space and cost less than the Porche already.
And there are lots of high end sports cars that are easier to drive than a porsche too.
People buy a Porsche because it is a Porsche - and for most of them - the price is not an issue.

If you sat in the back seat of the Cayenne and Macan you'd get what I am talking about.

@TomM people may not buy a Porsche for the space, but with the Macan NOT being radically different in size or price to the Cayenne, the latter will likely see sales decreases as people go for the newer Macan.

With the Cayenne selling in the same price band as the X5, ML, Range Rover and given that American buyers cross shop big time on price, it would benefit Porsche to rethink the Cayenne into something competitive not to mention different from the Macan.

I have to wonder whether the Macan was intended to be a lot less expensive than the Cayenne and somewhere it wound up being nearly as expensive when comparably equipped.

I thought the big draw for the Cayenne V6 was the stick option?

Nobody's talking about the Cayenne GTS. Has it been axed? It would have been a major differentiating factor to the Macan because the latter only has turbo models.
I personally would not opt for a Macan instead of a Cayenne because the Macan is too small, effeminate and expensive. I really don't know what all the fuss is about. The Macan is not a sports car and its utility is compromised by its smaller size. It is a pity that they've overpriced it. I can see many going for an X3 instead.

Eh....it would be nice if Autospies could annotate the photos or provide a key because not all of them make it clear which exact model is being shown eg I'm guessing the metallic brown is the diesel (S GO301), but I'm not sure. There is something written on the fender of the driver's side but the resolution is not enough for me to make out what it says.
The 2015 S looks better thsn the pre-facelift version because they have enlargened the grill. However it does not look as stunning as the 2014 preface-lift GTS. That SUV smacks of youthful exuberance with its wide open grill that says "let's go for a spin!"
It may be time to hunt for a 2014 GTS because the 2015 may well have been guillotined. You really cannot beat a 2014 GTS in Carmine Red or Classic Silver for class, style , comfort and ability.
I see the Macan as the baby brother or should I say baby sister. It is just too effeminate. An SUV must have rugged presence otherwise it may as well be a minivan or soft crossover.

headline is wrong: porsche did NOT axe the V6 cayenne.

the new S has a 3.6 liter, 420hp V6 that makes more power and is more fuel efficient than the previous V8 cayenne S.
