Corner 1, Lap 1. The few moments it took to get there after leaving the pit lane are how long it took to realize this multicar challenge would be the best of all for sheer fun.

Many of the regular head-to-head market segment showdowns that USA TODAY does with Cars.com and PBS TV's MotorWeek involve more mainstream vehicles — midsize sedans, compact SUVs, minivans.

I'd take the WRX over that Golf GTI any day of the week, for every single reason you can name. Performs better, is built better, is safer due to how Subaru builds cars, has killer AWD, and looks far more interesting. Oh noes it gets 3 mpg less... pretty sure the maintenance costs on that Golf will break through those fuel savings really quick.

In no universe is the GTI a better vehicle.

But it couldn't stop (plus it's ugly)

Disagree completely. The only things the WRX has over the new GTI is more power and AWD. I prefer the GTI engine for its refinement though. Everything else, especially the exterior and interior styling is light years better in the VW. Build quality is exceptional. Safety, I suggest you check how they just rated it after their testing, hint: very good. I've driven both cars and thought the GTI was fantastic and had to have it. A very fun to drive car, a bargain for what you are getting. In my opinion, it's so good at everything and you get so much kit for the price, that I abandoned the almighty BMW.

-Sciros: yes, Subaru's "built better" and such low "maintenance costs" thus the Class Action Lawsuit against Subaru and engines that burn excessive amounts of oil.

Some old Subarus went through oil quickly. Yep. The class action lawsuit is lawyers wanting to make a quick buck. You really think it means their cars are worse built than VW? For real? Those same Subis are still on the road today, more than I can say for their contemporaries from VW.

Why did cars.com not mention in the video that the WRX was a pre-production vehicle as they did in the written write-up?

Why include a Juke and not include a Mini Cooper S, even if a new model is on its way?

Why was a Honda Civic Si not included?

They said they ran into trouble getting a hold of a Civic Si. Same with a Cooper.

The article clearly stated why the Honda wasn't included.

The GTI is a blast to drive. LEASE rather than buying one. They can get pricey FAST.

Where is the Mazda3 S Grand Touring?

too bad the MINI didn't get included, it would have been a front runner in this comparison
