BMW Plans Total Domination With Eight SUV Model Ranges By 2020

By the end of the decade, BMW could offer as many as eight different SUVs, ranging from the compact front-drive X1 to a more sporting X8 variant of the big seven-seat X7 SUV that was confirmed for production earlier this year.

The new X1, which will also spawn a more sporting X2 variant, will come to market in 2015 in both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive guise. Elsewhere in the range BMW is getting ready to launch new versions of the X3 and X4, while the new X6 will get its world debut at the Moscow motor show next month.

Audi and Merc are moving this way as well, while Lexus hasn't budged from two (soon to be three) offerings. Are they missing the boat?

I think Lexus has been left behind in the dust by other other automaker's full catalog of SUV/CUV offerings. Maybe they've been trying to keep some type of balance between other products from Toyota & Scion & Subaru, but it just doesnt seem they've been focusing on the right things.

The latest Lexus lineup is more sport-oriented over stately luxury - this has only helped M-B, Audi, Buick, Cadillac, even BMW. I haven't seen a new Tundra (on the street) in forever...really. What's a Sequoia? The HX is a huge question mark as the Venza seems to be languishing.

Hopefully, the X7 won't be an awkwardly extended X5 like a few of these renderings suggest. If they add length, they need a bit more width - mostly b/c the X5 isn't a particularly large SUV.

Good question 009... I think you get diminishing returns as you dilute your offerings. You might sell more cars overall by hitting more niches in terms of price point and size etc. but given that there's a cost to expand product offerings vs just make the ones you already have more competitive, it may be that both strategies work well depending on what you're aiming for.

In any case, Lexus is adding a 3rd offering. Actually it's a 4th. RX, GX, LX, and the new NX. So they are also expanding the lineup, just not as aggressively as BMW.

What I see: Audi is doing great but still needs to get rid off the VW image to give a luxury image. BMW need to stop building Ugly and too expensive cars as the X6 , or just ugly as the x1, x4, 5gt, 3gt, 1 and 2 series, etc. Mercedes Stop doing beautiful cars but not practical enough to justify the investment.

Given how cheap the even-numbered ones are to do, it makes sense as long as they sell.

I'm assuming that when silly BMW gets up to the X12, it will fall into the public transportation niche.
