VW Takes It In The Bum Again In July - Sales Down 14.6% For Month - When Are They Going To Get It Right?

Volkswagen of America, Inc. (VWoA) today reported 30,553 units delivered in July.

The all-new Golf GTI is continuing its strong start with 1,727 vehicles delivered in July.  The seventh generation GTI has earned high praise, including being named the winner to the Cars.com/USA Today/MotorWeek “Cheap Speed Challenge.”  The challenge focused on compact coupes, sedans and hatchbacks that cost less than $30,000 and come with features popular among drivers looking for performance in a new car.  In addition, the GTI triumphed over fierce competition to win a recent MotorTrend comparison test, taking top honors in the compact car segment. The all-new 2015 Golf TSI and TDI Clean Diesel models recently hit showrooms and will see a full month of sales in August.

“We’re thrilled with the early response to the all-new 2015 Golf GTI, which has already racked up some impressive accolades in both enthusiast and mainstream publications," said Mark McNabb, chief operating officer, Volkswagen of America. “With the continued roll-out of the Golf family, including the Golf TDI Clean Diesel, the turbocharged TSI model and the upcoming e-Golf this fall, we are confident we will see more showroom traffic at our dealers in the weeks and months ahead."

The Chattanooga-built Passat totaled 8,668 units delivered for the month. In July the Passat TDI, the only clean diesel in the midsize sedan segment, delivered 2,442 clean diesels or 28.2 percent of total Passat sales.

Last month Volkswagen announced they will be investing approximately US$900 million in the production of a newly developed, seven-passenger SUV at the Chattanooga, Tennessee manufacturing facility. The investment will create 2,000 additional jobs in the US and includes the establishment of a National Research & Development and Planning Center in Chattanooga. Production of the new vehicle will start at the end of 2016.

Total Jetta deliveries for June, including SportWagen, accounted for 13,142 units. The Tiguan and Touareg delivered 2,121 and 581 units respectively.

As for myself, I'm waiting to see how the 2015 models are going to priced and equipped. However, the sales manager at my dealer told me he is going to bid on a near new 2014 Q5 TDI at an internal auction next week. If it has what I would order if buying new, it may end up in my garage.

Are the bids to see how low the price will go? A Q5 TDI isn't hard to get and only a fool would pay list or above.

VW's problem as a brand is massive.

VWOA has never been serious about targeting the American market. This market rewards style and value. VWs lack style and they sure as hell are not a value.

The attempt at a mainstream Jetta came with garbage engines. The "two point slow" and the 2.5 could not have been more class trailing if they tried. The Passat was a roaring success until the class trailing reliability/durability kicked in

VW needs a product offensive but (1) they have no desire to make it happen and (2) even if they did they are slow to market.

In short, Germany does not want to admit what's wrong and to fix it.

you sum that up nicely. Germany is unwilling to admit it has a problem with VW in the US

The 06 Jetta I had was the 2.5, and I was very impressed with the engine. City economy wasn't the best, but I took a trip from Seattle to Klamath Falls and back, posted speeds or higher, and the total trip was 35MPG. Considering that included climbing some pretty good grades to reach the interior Oregon plateau, that wasn't bad at all. I always felt it was smooth and quiet, and had plenty of low end punch.

@atc98092 and you singing the praises of the 2.5 obliterates the scathing criticism that engine has always had

I'll bet Toyota is praying VW buys FCA because that would cause an implosion at Auto Union and Toyota would be the larger automaker without having to invest in competitive product.

you are correct

VW knows it can survive w/o the U.S. market. That's why they don't care.

Audi will allow them to still have a presence here.

Essentially VW needs to rebadge the Audi A3, A4, and A6 platforms as well as their compact SUV's. Slightly decontent them and call them VW's.
That might work. Also VW needs the Polo and Up for the N A market.
