Analysts Worry That Porsche Is Growing Too Quickly

It's hard to avoid superlatives when describing the remarkable growth trajectory of Volkswagen Group's premium sports car brand, Porsche. Whether one looks at unit sales, revenues or profits, business is booming.

Strong global demand for its products has Porsche on course to top its goal of surpassing annual vehicle sales of 200,000 by next year – if not this year – analysts predict, well ahead of its 2018 deadline. The sales surge, however, has some industry watchers worried that Porsche's parent is placing too much emphasis on volume, which risks robbing the brand of its exclusivity while also raising the danger of quality problems.

Exactly my thoughts. If you fail to grow, you will not survive. Just look at Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz all going downmarket in order to increase sales and profitability.

In addition to moving downmarket, one must also make significant moves upmarket or risk diluting their brand.

It's about balance, Mercedes had best sellers at the top of the market and bottom of the market last month, which is the perfect scenario, and are currently making moves to add more exclusive variants of the S Class, and a new AMG GT sports car.

If one is a luxury marque and only finding the majority of their success in the 30-50k range...there lies a branding problem and you may have trouble convincing buyers, your higher end offerings are worth the 80k plus tag

As I recall, Mercedes-Benz is the only Luxury Make other than Rolls/Bentley/Land Rover, and exotics that moves significant volume of 100k plus vehicles

I'll add that Audi is also looking to expand its presence at the high-end of the market with a flagship Q8 SUV, a more aggressively designed next A8, a flagship A9 coupe to compete wit the S-class coupe and an expensive convertible that would slot much higher than the A5 convertible.

This is in addition to Audi's rapidly expanding lower-end offerings such as the A3, Q3, Q4 etc.

When till you try to sell your Porsche and see how many other used Porsche are flooded on the market. Porsche is no longer unusual or special.

Gotta love the "sky is falling mentality" of the so-called experts (as well as the Trolls here at Autospies like "JDMUSMuscle")

Porsche has 'diluted the brand' throughout its history with crap like the Porsche 914.

A performance SUV that truly delivers a Porsche experience, like the Macan, probably won't hurt the brand.
