Mercedes doing it big at both ends of the market. That is a true luxury brand. BMW and Audi can't do on both ends, they both lack at the top and Mercedes is selling just as well as they are or better at the bottom.

Yes, if you are a luxury brand, the best way to launch an entry level product with minimal risk to brand image, is to launch an AWESOME model at the high end of the spectrum.

It's a balancing act but when executed right, its a win win for the brand

As some of you may know, I like and respect MB quite a bit and glad to see the results shown here. My only concern with the MB line up is the CLA. I realize MB fans will continue to buy that and BMW/Audi/Lexus fans will continue to buy those respective cars for the most part, but if the CLA model has complaints and quality issues, it could really affect the rest of the brand. The entry-level luxury segment is so competitive with so many good competing models and given the large volume and active demographic of those young professional customers in that segment, word of mouth complaints have a much bigger impact than complaints in other segments.

Yes the CLA needs to be pulled in for the 2015 model year refinements. The 2015 doesn't arrive until December so maybe they're going to address some of its issues. The stiff ride, better standard equipment and some better interior trim pieces would go a long way towards making it a full fledged member of the Benz family. It a good looking little car that deserves a little more of the new found ultra premium feel that Mercedes is putting into the new C and S.

The CLA will have no negative impact on the brand. Those 'complaints' you are referring to have been widely known since the car's introduction (for about a year now), yet the demand is still very high and Mercedes continues to see tremendous growth through their line.

nguyenvuminh: You might be right, but my concern is practicality, CLA is nice but the rear is almost useless, and they need to refine the engines and driving quality needs more work.

The 'S' class is a true hallmark automobile.

I don't dispute the rear being small but I would think the people that are looking at this doesn't have that high on their priority list. Similar to those buyers of coupe-sedan or coupe, they know going in the rear seat isn't too useful. I was referring to comments and magazine write-ups on the stiff ride, the quality of the materials, etc. Again, I like MB a lot more than BMW/Audi/Lexus (not that I don't respect those 3, I just like and respect MB more) and I see the CLA as a possible weak link in their line up.

they'll be over a million cars sold by end of august. pretty amazing numbers given the price points of many of the cars.
