Audi A8 to Get R10's Diesel Engine?

Motorauthority.com says that the A8 might get the R10's V12 diesel engine. I think that it is highly unlikely that the A8 will get a reworked version of the R10's actual diesel engine. There is almost no way that a racing engine can be adopted into a modern car. For the same reason we don't see Renault's powered by 20,000 RPM screaming engines. However, it is very likely that Audi will use R10 engine principles to make a V12 TDI. I expect the V12 to be larger, maybe 6.3 liters. Now it looks like a V12 TDI engine is very likely.

If Audi builds the V12 TDI it would have 480 hp, possibly, and as much torque as the gearbox can handle.

Audi will not spend the money to certify any diesel engine for the US unless it is 50 state legal. The 3.0 TDI will be the first 50 state legal Audi diesel to enter the US market next summer in the Audi Q7. They will use that engine because it fits into most of the vehicles sold here: aka, A4 sedan, avant, and cabrio, A6 sedan and avant, Q7, and A8. There may also be a performance TDI for use in the A3 and upcoming TT eventually, but a V-12 TDI for the A8 is huge stretch for the US. There would simply not be enough of them sold to justify the cost of 50 state certification. Audi only sells about 7-8K A8 models in the US to begin with. The volume of diesel A8s would number probably less than 1000. Unless they see some huge marketing advantage for it's existance here, there could be no justification for the expected cost.
