WHAT Does The Lexus GX Have That Makes It SO Attractive To Customers EVEN NOW?
Out of the variety of metrics available to measure success in the automotive industry, one of the more interesting ones is the "days-to-turn" figure that is calculated. This is the average number of days it takes a dealer to move a unit off the lot.

Essentially, this provides a snapshot as to which vehicles are the hottest sellers.

And, you **may** be surprised at who was in the Top 5:

5. Mercedes-Benz GL-Class
4. BMW X5
3. Subaru Forrester
2. Lexus GX
1. Land Rover Range Rover

Seeing this list was a bit of an eye opener for us. The big surprise was the Lexus GX. While we've expressed our thoughts about the car — we think it's good — the thing is it has been around for a while. Sure, it's been updated but considering all-new sets of wheels have come around, shouldn't vehicles like the GL and X5 be AHEAD of it?

That said, what do YOU think has Lexus GX buyers coming back? What makes it SO attractive?

...In order to identify America’s fastest-selling cars, 24/7 Wall St. used days-to-turn figures provided by TrueCar. Days to turn is the average number of days it takes dealers to sell a car. In an interview with 24/7 Wall St., Eric Lyman, vice president of industry insights at TrueCar, noted that days to turn strips out factors such as transport time and the distance from the plant to the dealership. As a result, this measure “provides a level playing field to measure the demand at the dealership level,” Lyman said...

While the GX is capable, it is based on the Toyota 4runner.

The LX is based on the Land Cruiser and has moved less then 3,000 units in the first half of 2014.

Compare that to the GL which has outsold the Lexus GX and LX, moving over 13,000 units for the year so far in the US.

Lastly. Lexus keeps inventory relatively low for GX and LX models as they are not best sellers, while they keep high inventory of the Lexus RX model, which is their best selling model period

Just keep everything in context and the numbers make sense.

@Car4Life whilst I agree with the possibility of your inventory statement, you're wrong about the GX and the 4Runner.

The GX is based on a model not sold in America, called the Land Cruiser Prado. If you google image it you'll immediately see the resemblance of the 2 models. as you would the LX and the Land Cruiser 200 series.

In some markets, such as mine, you get the Land Cruiser 200 series, known simply as the Land Cruiser in the US, and the Lexus LX but only the Prado and not the Lexus GX.

To make things even more confusing, in some markets the Land Cruiser Prado is simply called a Land Cruiser as well.

Here in South Africa we generally refer to the car the GX is based on as a Prado and it's very popular.

Yes the Prado and 4 runner a same line different trim levels for different markets.

GX borrows chassis from Prado, but suspension components come from the 4runner

All in all...a glorified Toyota, with an awkward top heavy stance

@car4life you're wrong. The GX is based in the Prado. Different line all together, even though the 4Runner may share the some of the suspension components, you can't say the Lexus ES is based in the corolla because it may share some components. The GX is based on the Prado. You can't compare a Prado to a 4Runner.

Shame, I feel sorry for you but thank you for the insightful commentary, you definitely come across as someone who has taken advantage of all the education and developmental opportunities your country has to offer. All the best.

It's a terrible vehicle to drive. It has truly agricultural manners. It dances in cross winds and the live axle out back is particularly unruly. This mess sell ONLY with steep discounts.

There are a LOT of vehicles you could describe that way but NONE of them are in the hottest selling list for 2014. And in the number 2 position at that! My guess is people are DYING for a Lexus SUV with 3 rows of seats like an MDX and this is the only thing that fits the bill for them right now in the Lexus stable.

The simple answer is that Lexus (and its inventory management software) knows that this SUV kind-of sucks..so they don't send very many here. Therefore, since there is limited inventory here and they don't sell very many, it is a "fast" turning car.

The GX is really an awful SUV and its just ridiculous that Lexus has the distinction of being a "fast-turning" vehicle

Agreed. The days to turn leaders tend to be the lower-volume sellers, so inventory levels would be low, so fewer cars sitting on the lot.

Lexus dropped the base price of the GX significantly by a few grand with the recent redesign, so it all comes down to pricing.

simple: price reductions. they reduced the base price by thousands to move the metal this year. everyone else has raised prices.

"Days-to-turn" doesn't mean sh*t. Lexus has traditionally kept it pretty low, which means you keep production in-sync with sales.

The best mid sized SUV on the market. Long lasting and trouble free. The 52k GX is not the best seller the 56 to 57k is super hot....

The GX is still a brawny, sizable luxury SUV. It's probably been so popular b/c it's not an LX/Land Cruiser.

And it's probably for consumers with "Land Cruiser money" but want a price-comparible Lexus instead of a Toyota - where the price of an LX seems a bit too much just to own a big Lexus SUV.

And if Lexus was really smart, they'd been had the Rav4-based HX & a Sequoia-based Lexus SUV for the US years ago.

WHAT Does The Lexus GX Have That Makes It SO Attractive To Customers EVEN NOW?

Not a fucking thing.

This ugly shit has not been selling good, read the sales results right here on autospies. this is an article solely financed by Toyota bosses to create an interest in American people who might be car-ignorant and might fall for this ugly-ass car's hype, dropping a price wont help. it didnt help Benz to move the R class either. an ugly car is always an ugly car.

Lexus GX and 2014 Infinti QX56 hint greenhouses. If Hyundai made an SUV that copied the GX's greenhouse it would be accused of copying allowing the Infinti to get away with it. Just like how the Infinti EX greenhouse is also on the 2009 Suburu Impreza hatch and Mazda CX-5.
