Sprint Car Racer, Kevin Ward Jr., Involved In Fatal On-Track Accident With NASCAR's Tony Stewart
It's never easy to write about on-track accidents and fatalities, but unfortunately, the bell has tolled again.

In a sprint car race held in Upstate New York last night, a 20-year-old Kevin Ward Jr. was involved in a tie-up with NASCAR's Tony Stewart who was also competing. From raw video footage I saw, it's clear that in turn two at Canandiagua Motorsports Park Stewart's number 14 car had the inside line and made contact with Ward Jr.'s number 13 car. Due to this contact, Ward Jr.'s vehicle was spun and he wound up crashing. His right rear tire was flat.

From there, Ward Jr. made his way out of the vehicle and in what's said to be tradition — I don't follow sprint car racing or NASCAR, so I cannot confirm — he walked down further onto the dirt track that was under a yellow caution flag and began pointing at another driver's vehicle and then Stewart.

What happens next is up for debate.

Stewart's vehicle appears to fishtail/maneuver, then strikes Ward Jr.

From the only raw video I've seen of the happening, to me, it appears Stewart is carrying far too much speed under the caution flag.

Although the footage is widely available at this point and I could post it here, frankly, I believe it is not in the best interest of the victim's family or the story. If you'd like to see the video, you can find it here. Please note, it is raw content.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Kevin Ward Jr.'s family.

On Saturday, Aug. 9, 2014, at or about 10:30 p.m., there was an on-track incident at the Exit of Turn 2 at the Canandiagua Motorsports Park, during the Lucas Oil SuperSprint Feature race. The race was in Lap 14 of a 25-lap race, when one car lost control and spun coming to rest along the outside retaining wall. The race was immediately put into caution, slowing the cars on the track. The driver of the car that spun exited the race car and walked down the track onto the racing surface. Two race cars traveling in tandem approached as the driver continued down the track, gesturing to the two approaching cars. The first car swerved to avoid the driver out on the track. The second car, operated by Tony Stewart, struck the driver. The driver was treated by on-track medical staff and was transported to F.F. Thompson Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased at 11:15 p.m. At this point, Mr. Stewart has cooperated with the investigation, which is ongoing. The Sheriff's Office has asked the individuals who possess amatuer video to please make contact with this office so that copies of the video accounts can be obtained for review. Please contact the Sheriff's Office at 585-394-4560.

From the videos I have seen, I would also concur that he was carrying too much speed. It was negligent on both parties, yet I feel that Stewart needs to be severly punished as he had ample time to slow down

Agreed.

So far no criminal charges.

00R, you can't be serious about criminal charges. Ward Jr. Was wearing an all black suit at night while running into high speed traffic on a race track. Not eactly the most optimal of situations to let an ego get in the way.

I didn't say that's my belief; however, this is something being considered as per the latest reports.

There's a reason why the DA was alerted and the sheriff's office is investigating the on-track crash. Other images from last night show a LARGE law enforcement presence on site post crash.

This is not a normal situation and who knows where this incident will lead.

I saw the video. Ward was an idiot, raging so hard that he ran out on the track at night to confront Stewart while he is racing. Ward WANTED to be by that car, but he got too close. Stewart looked like he gave it a bit of gas as he realized that Ward was so close, trying from what I could tell to either get by him more quickly so they wouldn't collide, or basically trying to weave out of the way to avoid collision. But Ward came way too close and got caught in the rear wheel and the rest is clear enough.

Nothing that I saw in the video made me thing maliciousness. I saw a kid raging so hard he couldn't think before acting and it got him in a collision with a dirt racer and got him killed.

Could Stewart have better avoided him? Not sure anyone can really know that besides Stewart, but it didn't look like he went out of his way to hit the kid. More like the kid went out of his way to get hit.

Personal opinion: Darwin award candidate.

Looked at it a bit closer. Ward gets himself into Stewart's path and tries to signal for Steward to stop (or something). So first he is actually dead ahead of Stewart. Realizes that Stewart is NOT slowing down and starts trying to get out of the way but it's way too late at that point and he gets tangled up in the car. The whole "he swerved INTO him" is bullshit but he was right in front of Stewart so Stewart either straight-up did not see him until way too late, or it was on purpose. I suspect the former -- it's much more likely. After all is there some history of Stewart running over random dudes on the race track?

What are the rules of racing after causing a collision on purpose?

"After all is there some history of Stewart running over random dudes on the race track?"

How many fights has Tony been in?

Matt Kenseth--Nearly two years ago, Stewart threw his helmet at Matt Kenseth’s car in the middle of a race. On Lap 332 of the Irwin Tools Night Race, the two drivers were involved in a crash that sent them both into a wall. Stewart was unable to control his anger, and didn’t hide the fact that he was out to get Kenseth.

"I checked up twice not to run over him,” Stewart said after the race. “And I learned my lesson there, and I'm going to run over him every chance I got until the end of the year. Every chance I got."

Joey Logano--In March 2013, Stewart tried to get physical with another driver on the track. When Joey Logano blocked Stewart on the last restart at Auto Club Speedway, the three-time Cup champion was none too pleased. Crew members had to separate the two, as Stewart pushed Logano, unprovoked, and threw a punch at him.

"He has that right, he has the choice to do that," Stewart said of Logano’s blocking. "If he ever turns down across in front of me again, I don't care what lap it is, he won't make it through the other end of it."

Kurt Busch--See youtube

Stewart’s antics haven’t been limited to incidents on the track. He was accused of shoving a photographer in 2002, which led to a $10,000 fine by NASCAR a stint on probation. He was eventually forced to see an anger management specialist, though he would find himself in hot water just two years later for hitting Brian Vickers.

Though he was never charged with a crime, Stewart did have a run-in with the police in 2011. He got into an altercation with the co-owner of Sydney Speedway in Australia, whom he allegedly hit with his helmet. Stewart apologized for the incident, but he used his helmet as a weapon just two years later.
