2007 Lexus LS 460 Comes Up Short Dynamically

2007 Lexus LS 460 Comes Up Short Dynamically
The 2007 Lexus LS 460 tested by Car and Driver only recorded a 0-60 time of 6 seconds, not 5.4 seconds like Lexus has promised. Car and Driver says it is because of the tall first gear. While this is disappointing, the scary part is the braking. It took the big Lexus 209 feet to stop from 70 mph. For comparison, the Audi Q7 SUV only requires 170 feet. The car did have the regular all-season tires.

If that is true, that is disapointing and Lexus should fix the stopping distance. Don't care about the 0-60 too much in lexury cars.

Does C&D really think the majority of buyers of such cars actually care about 0-60? It looks good on paper but buyers in this class care more about comfort first and foremost. I would have tested this car from a comfort POV, not performance.

car and driver is biased against lexus like somebody said in a post about infiniti. THey like honda, acura, infiniti way more. Im sure those results will very with different magazines. Im not saying they lied, but mistakes happen. The figures dont even add up. How can it be slower than the old car but have more horsepwer and torque. Also, the stopping distance sounds a bit off too.

lexus doesnt make up those figures. If it can be achieved by lexus, it should be achievable by these drivers.

Well, the 0-60 time is actually .3 seconds better than the LS 430. But the braking is HORRIBLE, the Q7 stops in 39 less feet. What makes it even worse, the 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche LT stops in 5 feet less than the LS 460 (204)

huu76, you must really have something against German cars. Every time I see a post from you it's got negative, and incorrect, figures regarding them. The 0-60 time of the 750 in every single magazine is 5.4-5.7 seconds. The 760 is quicker, though BMW makes so few of them I doubt most magazines have test data on them. The S-class is virtually identical 0-60 to the 750. Either of them are apparently significantly quicker than the LS460, though I would seriously doubt anyone who is considering buying the LS really cares about how quick they are. The stopping distance, now that's an issue. The 750 and S both stop considerably shorter, and if it's 30 feet like the test showed that's a big, big difference (like $40k in an accident different).

sorry, 40 feet, and that's compared to an SUV. If those numbers are accurate that's a really big issue.

Go out and buy teh October 2006 issue of Car and Driver. It has two red and one blue car on the cover and says "2007 new cars" on the front. Procced to read pages 92-96.

Car and Driver:

Heres an idea. When performing a braking test how about applying full force to the breaks?

Something just doesn't add up. Is this a new 60 minutes/Audi situation?

If this data is correct, then this car is absolutely a POS but I highly doubt it. I mean this is Car and Driver we're talking about.

This is so pathetic. Most of you German fans will come up with anything to bash Lexus. A 50 year old man/woman (who will most likely buy this Lexus) isn't going to care if their car goes 0-60 in under 6 seconds. But I do have to say, that as safe as Lexus is, the stopping thing should be fixed. But beside that, who cares. We all know you German fans are threatened by Lexus so just give it up.

Wow, I never knew facts could spark such controversity. BTW, while reading the rest of the magazine, the Lincoln Navigator (the one that weights 6,119 pounds) also stops in 209 feet from 70.

Get ready for another 100+ comment messages. It makes me wonder what really is popular? Well I have to say that .4 seconds won't hurt many of the people who will actually buy the car, especially since the Lexus is seen as the sporty one of the segment. Also I am kind of worried about the braking.

However I must say that Lexus fans really don't have anything to weep about. Most of these magazines base their reviews on the performance section of the car - and this is usually where most Lexus fall behind otherwise the Lexus brand automobiles are on the top of the other sections, I have read alot of reviews from the major magazines and websites the story is the same for all of them.

Lexus = Average for Performance
Lexus = Great in everything else.

In fact most of the editors and review writers will actually say something like this: "since we are enthusiasts we would pick (for example) a Mazda 6 over a Toyota Camry." I have seen that type of statement alot. I have read this alot and even though Toyota's aren't really that sporty they win alot because they are the best in everyday driving.

Come on now, isn't it just common sense that 0-60 times and braking distances will vary no matter who tests a car.

FYI when Car & Driver tested the new ES350 they recorded 0-60 time of 6.2 seconds while Lexus says the ES will do 60 in 6.8

Let me see.. The independent test in Europe recorded 0-62 MPH times of 5.7sec. But C&D could only muster 6-sec for 0-60. I suspected that Mr. looney Tune & colleages either had a bias or couldn't drive! I've noticed a bias, for whatever reason(s), since their reporting for the 2001 model year. Thats when I stopped buying their magazines. Of course, I already have my deposit down to reserve a LS 600h L. So they can say whatever they want.

Car and Driver usually gets THE best numbers. When they don't they point out why they didn't. They usually "abuse" the cars into good times. Also braking doesn't take much skill.

I just googled a few 70-0 distances to compare:

210ft GMC Seirra C3
170ft Chevy Cobalt
160ft VW GTI (2003)

If this figure is correct then the car is woefully underbraked for its class.

I can appreciate that this is not produced to be a sports sedan, however, I would not buy this as I consider this less safe (shitty brakes, germans use better steel and materials in their frames, etc)

These tests by Car and Driver doesn't really surprise me. It's kind of obvious that Car and Driver favors BMW, Infiniti and Acura and they seem to really HATE Lexus for some reason or other.
I picked this up a while back when Car and Driver was giving out their versions of 'awards' for cars and they had seemed to have a real unfavorable disposition towards Lexus.
When Lexus totally redesigned their new IS series(with the chief engineer being a driver of Porsche 911's), Car and Driver still placed the Lexus IS350 second to the BMW even though the point total was equal(yes, the IS350 had no manual option). It seems no matter what, Car and Driver has it out for Lexus.

Chewy- I don't think the typical Leexus driver cares about 0-60 like the German guys do. However they better care about the braking, if they don't, then the rear end collisions will take car of them for us. come on lexus at least brake on comparison to a chevy SUV.

I hope there is a reason why the Lexus underperformed in both acceleration and braking - such as it was a pre-production vehicle or it was in a "running in" period - otherwise I agree with some others on this website that the Lexus overpromised and underdelivered. . . and this doesn't bode well for future press coverage.

Separately though, I do believe that Car and Driver is consistently biased against Lexus and Infiniti and overly respectful to BMW. Fortunately the power of glossy magazines such as C&D, Motor Trend, etc. is waning. Surely the most attractive, intelligent, fashionable, inquisitive auto-shoppers are turning to websites such as AutoSpies for their auto news!

Stats here are few more cars that the Lexus should benchmark against

Audi
A8L- 183ft (2005)
TT- 178ft (2000)
S4- 147 (2001)
GT Coupe- 179ft (1985 pre ABS)
A4- 181ft (2001)
RS6 - 171ft (2003)
RS6- 202ft (2003 from 100 mph)

Mercedes Benz
C55- 165 ft
SL55- 176 (2003)

BMW
X5- 168ft (2004)
750i- 164ft (2005)

Kia-
Amanti- 177ft (2006)

Hyundai-
Azera 177ft (2006)

The point is, other than 1 SUV out there, I saw no cars with that long of a 70-0 figure since the 70's. Lexus you should do better than that.

maybe it really needed running in, like mercbasher said. or perhaps the brakes were over-heating?
you never know. it could be heavier than normal (might have the ottoman seat) might have wrong fuel, AC on, lots of electrical systems, it all adds up.
doesn't really explain the brakes though.
and if it has 8 speeds, why does it need a tall first gear?

The results and opinions of a magazine isn't the definitive word on a new car. Wait for the other mags to do their own testing before reaching absolute conclusions.

Personally, I don't think the Lexus engineers/testers would think that braking distance would be acceptable. I doubt the LS will have stopping power of a Ferrari, but I'm sure the designers at least made something competitve in its market segment.

0-60: 5.4 or 6.0 or 6.5
Does it really matter in a 4400 lb. Luxury sedan which has the main goal of pampering the occupants who couldn't care less about the fractions of seconds it takes to reach a certain speed?

I would be far more interested in the 0-60 times of the IS500 or the M3 or the RS4 and the like.

I honestly don't think people that drive such vehicles worry about 0-60mph acceleration times, my snag with this is the breaking distance.
This is a safety issue and I believe Lexus ought to address this IMHO.

These test numbers do not make logical sense. The LS430 with approx 100hp less can acheive a 5.7 sec 0 to 60. I do not know of an instance when Lexus has made untrue claims. Lexus does have a history that should allow more tests to be completed before we make assumptions. It will interesting to see the results of additional testing.
No matter what brand of car you like,Let us be open minded to test drive other car manufactures. We may be suprised on what we find. I think Lexus will prevail in this controversy.
