Auto Express Comparison Test: 2015 BMW i8 vs. Porsche 911! The Porsche 911 Wins!
BMW is out to rip up the sports car rulebook with its all-new i8. Featuring jaw-dropping looks and advanced construction, the hi-tech newcomer promises to blend scorching supercar performance with supermini running costs. And its figures certainly make remarkable reading. With 357bhp the i8 is capable of sprinting from 0-60mph in under five seconds, yet it claims nearly 135mpg at the pumps, and boasts emissions of just 49g/km.

Facing the bold new BMW is one of the oldest sports cars on the planet: the Porsche 911. However, while the legendary rear-engined machine has been around for 50 years, the latest seventh-generation model is one of the most complete performance cars ever.

The BMW i8 may look like something from the future, but given its very high price tag relative to both the Tesla Model S and Porsche 911, it doesn't deliver the driving experience one would expect.

I respect where the i8 is going, but the look of it kills it for me. Reminds me of a concept car from the early 90's or something trying too hard to look "futuristic".....and BMW rarely gets it right with the wheels on a car. This thing could look so much better than it does, but I give them credit for developing and engineering it.

i really like the i8, i just wouldn't pay 140k to get one.. too many others id rather have like a 911, NSX, R8, zo6 all for about the same to less.. cant argue with the coolness and technology factor though.
id say at 100k the i8 becomes a no brainer..

As much as I despise the Porsche Super Beetle, I would take it over the BMW Eclipse any day of the week and the reason is simple. The Porsche is proven technology and the i8 is likely to use you as a development driver. Beyond that, at $140K who gives a rat's behind about hybrids and the environment?

The i8 is merely a fashion statement that is not going to age well at all.

So this comparison makes more sense than the Tesla/i8 comparison. I think the i8 represents the future and the 911 represents the benchmark. The true test will be when the NSX arrives with 500+ hp and the hybrid powertrain at a similar price as the i8.

And, yes, the i8 is an eyesore.
