The Porsche Macan is quickly sweeping the nation. Although it's been on sale for a relatively short period of time, I am seeing them starting to pop up everywhere. Just like when the Cayenne first hit the market, as well as the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque.

But now the Porsche is going to face some competition in the BMW X4. Clearly inspired by the X6, the X4 is based on the X3. Reality is that the X3 is a good product but is it even remotely capable of shaking a stick at the all-new king of the class?

Well, only one way to find out...

BMW's new coupé-syled crossover contender, the X4, is a new entry to the sports SUV market. Can the new upstart really rival the Porsche Macan, which has been received as one of the best compact SUVs ever? Steve Sutcliffe finds out.

of course the macan is better than the x4. the x4 is a bargain compared to the macan though and to have a fair comparison i think the x4 is going to need an M variant.

Well we know that an M Performance vehicle is in the works. No word if it's a legit M car or if it will be one of the poser Ms. And, no word if it'll be coming to the States.

I so badly wanted to buy a macan before getting my f10 5 series LCI (4th bmw) but per the porsche dealers, there was an 18 month delay from deposit to delivery in HK.

Sales wise the BMW X4 is dead on arrival when compared to the Porsche Macan.

The X4's strange looks and failure to match the Macan's driving dynamics will be the nails in the coffin for this confusing BMW.

The Macan combines typical Porsche styling in a compact package with leading driving dynamics for its class. That's a clear win-win formula.

I don't understand the X4. it's an X3 with less space. At least the Macan is an SUV; just smaller in size. Unless you like the look of the X4, I see no reason to choose it over an X3 or a Macan; whichever fits your budget.

Therein lies the problem. Most buyers will definitely NOT like the look of the X4 more than the X3, Macan or even the X5. That essentially makes the X4 a useless vehicle.

I'm very curious to read the research BMW used to make the case for producing the X4 in the first place. While there might be a (very) small segment of the market that wants a sporty alternative to the X3, there is an even smaller segment that will buy a sporty alternative that looks as hideous as the X4.

The X4 will be a complete sales failure in every sense of the word. BMW will realize its lesson just like it did with the 5-Series Gran Turismo.

Went to my local dealer in CA to check out the Mecan. Sold out until March 2015.
