DRIVEN + VIDEO: So, How Is The Cadillac Escalade ESV, Really? Worth It OVER The Chevrolet Suburban?
In the General Motors products universe it's clear that some cars are a little too close for comfort when compared to their respective relatives. Although the company said it would refrain from platform rengineering, it's still a reality.

So when the company decided to revamp the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban and also give us an all-new Cadillac Escalade, we were intrigued how the company would differentiate each product.

If you ask us, if you're going to take a dip into the GM world, you should definitely be a SMART buyer and experience the low and high-end models. You'd be completely silly not to. Avoid the marketing hype, folks.

That said, The New York Times recently got behind the wheel of the MASSIVE Escalade ESV to provide us with a bit of color and let us know exactly how different the Escalade is set apart from its relative, the Suburban.

**SEE the NYTimes review of the Cadillac Escalade, below!

Cars and S.U.V.s are not solely about transportation. If that were the case, we’d all be driving old Honda Civics and Ford Explorers. People want to drive their personalities, and because of that, the Cadillac Escalade looms large in pop culture. And if merely big isn’t big enough, Cadillac offers the ESV model that I recently tested, with a wheelbase 14 inches longer than the standard model’s....

...The fourth-generation Escalade is far more distinct and luxurious than the original or its other predecessors. The interior is unique to Cadillac, and the gracefully menacing exterior no longer looks like a Chevy that ditched its bow tie. The Escalade’s additional presence, power and luxury are tangible, though Chevrolet owners get a better user interface in MyLink. The touch sensitivity of Cadillac’s Cue system is lethargic...

I think the GMC version actually has the best design out of the three this time around.

it's still a covered and glorified Silverado pick-up, body-on-frame 1800's technology. so you choose, GL by Benz, which is unibody and not based on any pick-up or this boxy tasteless box on wheels

Hmmm.... Silverado and GMC Sierra have combined truck sales from 1990 through 2011 equal to 15.9 million units. Ford F-Series has sold 15.6 M units...Ram Pickups have sold 6.5M in that time...(38M, not even sure how many Suburbans/Yukons/Escalades,Expeditions & Navigators have been sold.) Seems there's quite a demand for that crappy 1800's technology, and how about the profits? GL is an expensive snob toy! Expensive to buy, expensive to option and expensive to fix. The base GL equipped like the new Escalade is over 18K more expensive and a leather interior is an option. Sorry... its a snob car! These GM cars are not for everyone but if Im not mistaken, has a 75% share of this market space?

Don't forget the ML as well, it was a body on frame SUV, we owned one and loved it. Even though it only had the V6, it towed quite well, actually it surprised me how well it towed.

I use CUE every day, its fine once you learn it. One needs to learn the BMW, Audi and the current ancient MB systems too. Is it perfect, are the others perfect..? I'd say its what the customer likes. CUE is actually pretty cool and the folks that criticize it without having even used it well everyone has an opinion as well as an @$$^)!*.

Yes G is a old fashioned body on frame SUV, but it's a limited production fun vehicle for those who dont mind driving something weird. As far as mass production SUV's go, they all are unibody

Remember, G was not oreginally a civilian vehicle, it was ordered by Shah of Iran, they ousted him and Benz was stuck with those ugly shit-boxes, so they luxurized and sold them as regular vehicles

GL is in the luxury category, competes with Escalade only. Tahoes, Suburbans are mass production non-luxury vehicles. they sell good I can see that, they have no competition. great family haulers---no questions ask. Toyota being a great quality car lost its war against them and took Sequoia out of production.

I cant stand anything from Detroit, but I cant deny that they do a great job on trucks and big family SUV's, no one can ever have a game with Americans in the truck field, especially full size

Shame, because the Sequoia was a much better vehicle. Ever try to sit in the third row of a tahoe/suburban/yukon/escalade? Your knees are in your chest because there is no footwell, and the seat is flat on the floor. My much smaller Land Rover LR3 is a million times more comfortable, I am 6'2" and can comfortably fit in the third row on my LR.
