What Are The Odds? Cadillac Plans To Pummel CLS And A3 With New Sub-ATS Sedan

Cadillac can’t afford to sit out on the small-car craze sweeping through luxury automakers. Buyers shopping for a badge rather than a car look right past Cadillac’s $33,990 ATS to the Mercedes-Benz CLA-class and the Audi A3, both of which start under $31,000. This compact class, relatively new in the U.S., is the fastest-growing segment globally in the luxury-car business.

In an interview with Car and Driver, Cadillac marketing chief Uwe Ellinghaus all but confirmed that the company is working on a new small sedan to shore up the brand’s bottom end. Specific details on the sub-ATS sedan are scarce right now, but Ellinghaus did reveal one key detail that could set the Caddy apart from the competition. Cadillac’s top leadership is in agreement that they don’t want to follow the German luxury brands by building new cars on a front-wheel-drive platform.

CLA I'm assuming not CLS.

I do not like the new logo... the wreath and crest remain in Europe and Asia... but not here? Does Porsche or BMW or Mercedes change their logo? Leave it alone and fire that person that signed off on the change. DO they think this will sell more cars? The wreath & crest had some "classic-ness" to it... this new thing is boring... plus the roundness is similar to other "round" logo's... maybe when Art & Science was new but not now.... go back to the other one...

The United States is the nation that does not respect heritage. In fact, that's why this country has none of it.

And for the Americans, they think Transformers is the best thing and don't really care much about luxury brands from other countries, so I believe that is why Caddy changed their logo to make it look a lot more like Transformers logo.

Actually, America is burnt out on Transformers. China is now the biggest consumer of that franchise. And there's plenty of heritage in the States. Crazy how people hake broad generalizations based on not much.

America does have heritage. Such as the history of McDonald's.

But I was simply comparing the U.S. to the European countries in terms of heritage.

Considering that neither the ATS nor CTS are pummeling their respective competitors, not sure a pummeling of the CLA and A3 (and 2 Series) would really happen.

Indeed. The ATS and CTS both need a 2 inch wheelbase extension to address cramped rear quarters and new rear styling to get rid of the generic bore styling.

At least Cadillac isn't as pointlessly adrift as Lincoln and Acura, and it easily outsells Audi, so all is not lost.

1) Pretty sure the headline is supposed to read "CLA", not "CLS".

2) The ATS is already smaller than all its competitors, which probably is a contributing factor to sales being relatively mediocre. Making an even smaller version would only make sense on a front wheel drive platform, since you could get similar interior space to the ATS in a smaller car. A rear drive car that small would have no cabin space by comparison -- that's why the A3 and CLA work, and why even BMW is going to be building the new 1-Series sedan on a front wheel drive architecture.

Rather than a stable of four sedans, following the germans, why not come to market with a youth vehicle below the STX? There is lots of innovation and reward opportunity in the X4 Q3 GLA space - but for God's sake don't copy any of them; instead nail it along with a re-imaging of the Cadillac brand.

The ATS is already too small to compete with the new A3/cla with a very cramped rear seat and no trunk space.

What they could do is bring that price down to the level of the A3/Cla - that might help a little.

And then produce longer versions of the Ats and Cts that might compete with their intended competition -= Noting that the new CTS has actually LESS space than a Toyota Corolla.

The problem with Cadillac is that they downsized their cars dramatically which turned off their old buyers completely - and they did not pick up enough new young sports car buyers to replace them. American LUXURY car buyers look for larger cars with more room - a compliant ride - and that LOOK big - even if they are not. The styling of the Cadillac ATS and CTS does nothing to make them look anything but the tiny cars they actually are.

TomM have you ever driven or sat in an ATS? The back seat is not a place for NBA players, but the average person is fine there for a while. The current C/3/& A4 are not much better but the ATS is smaller than the A3 & CLA? Pretty sure you're nuts on that one. This car competes head on with the C/3 & A4 not the smaller cars. The ATS trunk is fine for the people that use it. How many Families of 4 buy an ATS? The buyers are usually an individual or couple. The ATS has MUCH more room than the CLA, I have an ATS and have sat in the CLA (horrible car). The back seat is for Schnauzers. Not sure of the A3 which I have alot more respect for than CLA. Your comments are inane...The new CTS is a terrific car and the styling is great with terrific performance, a very competitive car. It is every bit the car its competitors are and probably less to buy and fix. These cars are not like Cadillacs of old, they're world class. If you don't like them say so, but denigrating great products you've never driven, sat in or experience... well you sound like JDSMinicule....

Cadillac should enter this market but the car needs to be special a downsized, revamped ATS. The new C is longer in length and wheelbase, and the next ATS will mimic that enhancement. Both the ATS & CTS are world class cars, period.

That the ATS & CTS are not HUGE sellers is not a big surprise, Cadillac needs to build on their successes. They need to continually build competitive products while providing a better value.(Matts right on pricing). Did Mercedes and BMW become the leaders over night? Took them decades, meanwhile the Luxury Market dramatically shifted their way AND their competitors were not able to adapt quickly enough.

Naming the new sub-ATS = Calais, ATS = Seville, CTS = CTS & Series 62, XTS = XTS or XTS DeVille (as it is not considered a long term prospect),
LTS = Fleetwood & Fleetwood Series 65... with VSport and V versions of all. These "Series" names are from the 40's & 50's which were golden years for Cadillac. They used "Series" decades before BMW...
