GM Says New S-Class Competitor Will Be Built On New Platform

General Motors Co.’s top product development executive confirmed Tuesday that the automaker will build a large Cadillac sedan on a new platform.

Mark Reuss, GM’s head of global product development, purchasing and supply chain, said Cadillac is working on the car that would come out in about a year. Bloomberg and other media outlets recently reported that GM planned to build a top-range, rear-wheel drive Cadillac car that would be available late next year.

The big Cadillac is expected to compete with the Mercedes-Benz S Class and BMW 7-Series. It would be positioned above Cadillac’s full-size XTS sedan. A year ago, Cadillac debuted its acclaimed Elmiraj full-size concept vehicle.

I believe the market for Gotham City styling is rather limited, so I don't envision the Caddy stealing many BMW or Mercedes customers.

Idiocy! This is the Cadillac that will bring Cadillac's mojo back.

Cadillac's wish = "Our new car will compete with the S class and 7 Series"

Reality = Competing with Hyundai Equus.

Because in reality, how many customers take a look at something American like Cadillac, when you can afford an S class, A8 or 7 Series, the real German status symbols?

Hey DB, plenty of folks will. This new car, if its as good as the other new Cadillacs,(which I'm sure it will be) will be another option for folks in that market. If the styling is anything like the ElMiraj or Ciel then they'll certainly present a compelling visual statement. The new S is not really a looker, the current 7 boring and the A8 (though I like it) looks like a bigger A4. Also Mercedes, BMW & Audi A8 are very expensive and very expensive to fix. Their resale values plummet quite quickly too. If this car is priced properly, it should do what Lexus did years ago w/LS400, a car that is as good, or better in many respects but priced to provide a better value. Why is your pic a GMC Yukon if America Sux so bad...pathetic...

The only kid who is pathetic is you, W124. I believe I have said this multiple times, but there still are uneducated people like you who don't understand why I keep saying America sucks. No wonder the only car you can afford is some beaten up Mercedes that is like from the 90's, which you most likely bought it with your minimum wage income.

And also, I buy Yukons and Escalades myself, as I love the American cars. That does not mean I have to "blindly" support anything American. Use your brains next time, pathetic dumb kid.

Everything you say is ridiculous because you need to type fast, your mom is out at the store getting you skittles and you're using her laptop. As you're complete D/B and everyone here thinks you should be banned (but you'd come back as just another creep). One thing is for sure, you got a lot of mouth.... which is why you're so irrelevant and pathetic.

Just as I thought, a kid with not much stuff in his brain.

"Oh everyone here thinks you should be banned! that's what my mom said!"

And I use a PC that is for professionals, not some cheap laptop that the minimum wage income earners like yourself (Obviously which is why you can only afford some used, beat-up Mercedes just to tell people "oh hey look! I have a Mercedes!") buy.

And "everything I say" is ridiculous. Pretty funny, because anything you say "shows" how intelligent you are. I only see a highschool drop out kid when I talk to you.

And you can call me anything you like, unfortunately, I am not sure if I actually care much about a kid who can't even buy a new Mercedes (And proudly posting that as his icon) and telling me things that just make me laugh. Try harder, kid.

At least Matt on this website has his own dealership and knows how to argue with people like me.

But practically you've got no class. Try harder, desperately. Isn't that why you are commenting to me? When practically no one really talked to you first?

dude, the W124 E320 is arguably the best built production car mankind has ever seen. it's a classic. I'm an engineer and can afford a new Benz, but often find myself searching for well maintained W124s

also, where do you come from that it's acceptable to put someone down for their (assumed) income? if he can only afford a "crumby" W124, it does humanity no service to look down on him.

obviously, there's been previous disagreements between you two, but let's come here to b.s. about cars, not just put each other down.

"GM Says New S-Class Competitor" The biggest joke of the day! The S-Class is a decades old symbol of luxury, innovation and status. GM can't even build safe cars that protect innocent lives let alone build a global icon.

It'll be a great used car value, with the history of Cadillac's and this category of cars resale value.

Normally I would say that a true, world-class competitor to the 7-series or S-Class by Cadillac would be an abysmal failure. At least at this point in Cadillac's change effort.

Cadillac has serious brand problems which make owning a Cadillac totally unacceptable (i.e. NOT COOL) to a typical MB or BMW buyer. Count me among them.

HOWEVER, if the production vehicle is as good as the Elmiraj concept, Cadillac could be the vehicle to alter the equation.

A real Elmiraj, close to the concept, would show that Cadillac is truly committed to being Cadillac again in a very serious way. Anything less and I will write this brand off.

I'm currently driving a Kia K900 and adoring life, but when the CTSV comes I will have one. I know several young professionals my age (28) that drive Cadillac CTSs and ATSs. Cadillac is NOT uncool. Cadillac is the cool for people who get that many Mercedes/BMW owners are sheeple and that Cadillac shows you are a leader not a follower.

I had the choice of a new Genesis or the K900 and I gambled on the K900. AMAZINGLY good car.

But, yes, I will have a CTSV.

Completely disagree! A few years ago I was having dinner w/VP of Marketing for Mercedes Benz (prior to driving the Maybach 57). I mentioned I'd sat in the new Audi A8 (my A6 was getting oil change). She asked me what I though about it and I said, "I feel like I sat in one of the worlds best cars, and I'm one of the few people that know it". If you don't "think" the Cadillacs are cool and quality products, I'd challenge you to go drive them and "know". I get looks absolutely everywhere I go in the ATS 3.6. Its a unique and special car. The Black & Red combination is terrific. I had a CTS 3.6 this past weekend and feel the exact same way, its terrific and I like CUE. Is it a perfect car...there is no perfect car, but its totally world class. I think the dash on the E Class is more elegant but the CTS is world class, period.

And one more point: I've had a Mercedes SL, 3 E Class's (E320/E500/E350), and 2 GLK's, and my wife is a die hard 3 Series driver.... I never thought I'd have a GM Product, ever. The ATS/CTS are that good and the wife loves the ATS.

If done well this could be a hit and help to reposition Cadillac. But it needs to be really good,as well as aggressive on the pricing.

If you have driven the new CTS, you'll see its world class. My ATS 3.6 was in for an oil change and they gave me a CTS 3.6 overnight. Its terrific and may be my next car. Thing was expensive though if you have the $ to buy any car, MB is hard to not select. One thing I'd like to hear from Matt is dealer service. My local Cadillac dealer failed to top off fluids on 3 separate occasions in a row (I had zero washer fluid 3X), and they failed to wash the car once, but never vacuumed the car. My E class cars were, and my wife's GLK is always washed and vacuumed, and fluids topped off every single service at the MB Dealer. Her battery died on her 2011 GLK and the roadside guy came to our house and replaced it free, with a new one in a total of 20 minutes, call to drive away. It gave me comfort knowing if she needs it they're there fast. We just traded the 2011 for a 2015. The Dealer service is exceptional...

I've driven the new CTS-Vsport and XTS...if this new platform and build is to compete with the likes of BMW 7 and S Class, then it's going to be one luxurious car. The new CTS and XTS already feel solid and luxurious, IMO.

To build a real competitor would take GM around 1.5 billion. The don't have it, and if it failed they would go broke....Again!!
