I think MB came out with it first in 1997 with their new S-Class. BMW probably followed suit. I should know this...but I don't. :(

Actually Audi had something similar as an option in their quattro systems in the Mid 90s, cannot remember what it was called.

Mitsubishi also had it on their cars as the SAYC also mid-late 90s
