Alphabet Soup: Mercedes Changing Naming Scheme - M-Class To Be Called GLE-Class Next Year
For whatever reason, the corporate folks at Mercedes-Benz have had enough of the existing naming schemes for some of the marque's current and future models, and are planning to mix it up a bit in the coming years.

For starters, Mercedes plans to change the name of its veteran SUV, the M-Class (or ML). When the 2016 model is introduced next year, you'll have to refer to the car as the GLE-Class. Merc wants the last letter in the class name of its SUVs to refer to the class it belongs to, in this case, the E-Class

Name change for sake of easy to remember makes a lot of sense, but what this ML SUV needs more than a name change is a real Benz-worthy design.

3-rd model and it's still fucked in the looks department, if not 100% at least 99% I'm sure that a good design will make this car achieve the Lexus RX's success, which means 100+k units a year in USA aline

Its not just the looks. The ML price is way out of line relative to the RX, not to mention VW Touareg and Jeep GC Summit. By the time one adds all the ML options to make an ML BlueTec equivalent to $59K loaded Summit or $63K loaded Touareg exec the ML 25% to 30% more expensive, and still is missing features the others have. And the ML is on the same chassis as the Jeep!!The ML is not a good value.

Why not GLM?

So there's going to be a GLK, a GLA, a GLE, a GL, and a G, and they're already renaming the not even out yet MLC to GL-something, and coming out with other future GL-something "coupe SUV's". And this is easier to remember?

The GLK is going to be renamed GLC (wonder if Mazda knows this?)to align it with is platform mate the C Class. This GLE makes sense as its E Class size. Vette71 is correct though, the pricing is insane. Jeep GC loaded is dramatically less than the ML/GLE. The Grand Cherokee is priced more like the GLK. I hated to do it but just replaced my wifes GLK with a 2015 GLK whereas the Grand Cherokee Overland or Summit would have been been priced in the same range but with substantially more content, room, size and capacity. Anyhow, its what she wants to drive, easy to park, drive, etc.. vs the GC. For $44K the GLK doesn't even have a back up camera or leather...

To Vette71

You're totally right. ML prices have been raised because of unsatisfying sales results again due to ugly-ass design and GLK came out and they needed the gap between one ugly SUV to another.

The NX is coming out soon and most likely RX prices will shoot up too, or maybe not, because RX is a sales winner and it sits on a Highlander, so they can afford to keep the price low to have at least one sales winner against Germans. All other Lexus models are sales failures except ES aka pimped-up Avalon witch is a segment that Germans don't offer, so no competition there

Maybe Infiniti and Cadillac are so far off base after all with the re-naming/intended re-naming of models. With luxury brands, I think that as models offerings continue to increase, we may see more of this.

Interesting nonetheless.

CORRECTION: "Aren't so off base..."

Changing the name is not going to help this sales flop....The RX killed it since 1999.....
