Preorders Indicate NX May Challenge RX For Top Sales Stop In Lexus Lineup
The new Lexus NX compact crossover, already racking thousands of orders in Japan, may unseat big sibling RX as the luxury brand’s top global nameplate. At least outside the U.S.

The NX went on sale in Japan on July 29, and the company has already booked 8,000 orders in the home market, Lexus International Executive Vice President Mark Templin said.

That compares with an initial monthly forecast of 700 here.

The company has also already notched a year’s worth of orders in Hong Kong and Taiwan, he added. And that comes on top of heavy order flow in Europe, Russia and China, he said.

The vehicle doesn’t even go on sale in the U.S. until November, and Toyota says it already has 5,000 American hand-raisers.

I intend to look at it, but how it looks in person will have a lot to do with my decision. That, and pricing with options, which we don't have her in the US yet.

Be prepared. It looks even worse in person than in pictures.

Looks like this going to put LEXUS on top again, it will most likely grab the sales crown again by the end of the year.

I predict it will gut RX sales. Lexus needed to debut the NX and follow it a nanosecond later with a repositioned RX. Lexus will increase sales overall, but the RX will cool sharply in volume.

I'd buy it. It actually looks like a 2015 car, unlike what we get from most automakers that are too scared to venture out of the 2006 BMW 3 series styling.

The people who can't exactly afford a "new" (I said new, not "used") luxury cars on this website are mad at this car, because they can't afford one.

They say it is ugly, or scary. But the people who know what a luxury car looks like can tell it is a car worth a lot of money.

JDMUSMuscle the thing is "ugly" but it will sell; and yes, I can afford more than a few new luxury cars in my driveway.

Actually JDS, this car was built for someone who can barely afford a luxury car but wants the image "badgewhore" just like the A3s and CLAs.

True but its an entry level SUV to get new customers into the LEXUS brand just like MB's GLA.

@knowitall1985 since you are a LEXUS dealer, how do you think this will do against the GLA? The GLA is starting at $33K, how about the NX?

8000 orders in Japan and 5000 in US, that's a pretty good # to start, but is it a good # for a car that is low priced and destined to be a volume seller???

The new S-class had 30000 pre-orders months before it was released and that's a car that usually sells 100000 units in its first 2-3 years and then finishes off with around 65000 units
This new NX is a RAV4, and that's a few hundred thousand units a year product, so 13000 pre-orders is not a good percentage

I remember when SC came out, every Lexus salesman and sales manager were programmed to say 25-30 people on the waiting per dealership and they couldn't get those cars made fast enough, well what happened to SC a few years later??? discontinued.

Back in 1998 when the new GS came out all Lexus salesmen were specifically trained to tell people that GS was selling like hot cakes, they did close to 40000 units 1-st or 2-nd year while the E-class was shooting 50000 units a year, what happened to GS??? it went down on sales year after year and model after model and now it's another struggling car with around 1000 units a month, give or take 20% percent

Read the sales results on this site on Sept 1-st or 2-nd when they get released by our very own autospies.com and you'll see that I can't make this shit up

Hyperbole has always been big part of Lexus advertising culture. In the 90's they used to advertise their cars every time a new feature would come out, such as "Now available with side impact airbags" or "introducing all new 290 hpwr engine" and cheap desperate crying shit like that. That had stopped for a while but the recent GS commercial brought the prostitution habit in Lexus advertising back and now the NX is being whored out to the public too

I saw NX in downtown LA while they were shooting the commercial, the fucker is more ugly in flesh,

As the old saying goes, we'll live and see

The SC430 sold well for at least 6 of the 10 years it was made. It was also selling for 10k over sticker from brokers who bought it from dealers with 100 or so miles on them. Lexus asked dealers to not sell over sticker.

With vehicles growing bigger with each generation, the NX is probably the same size as the gen 1 & 2 RX. Until the RX grows into the size of the Highlander and becomes a 7 seater (lose the stupid raked tailgate) the RX sales probably will be cannibalized.

Lexus also needs to look at getting rid of the GX and making the RX the new mid-tier SUV and giving it the proper size considering it shares the same platform as the larger Highlander.

Either way, Lexus will make a killing from the NX no matter what people think and in the end, the people willing to pony up money are the only ones that matter, not nobodies on the internet blabbing about how they can afford 20 Ferraris.

"Excuse me for being so epic, but, I'm pissed off, MAN!!" - Lexus NX

Lexus intended sales, for the first year at least, to be in the 35,000 range...not 100k. So these pre-orders are accounting for 1/3. I am guessing they will need to increase output.

Yes, the NX is based on the RAV4 platform...this does not make it a RAV4. Ever buy a new house? Ever notice how a builder can make upgrades to the same floorplan in another community and charge almost double for it? That's because of what goes into the level of upgrades that go into it. Like you can pay $35k for certain models of Mercedes...or you can spend $75k for the same model...different level of performance and materials for into the pricer one.
