Is Acura's Incoming TLX Too Much Like The Outgoing Models To Succeed?

Is Acura's Incoming TLX Too Much Like The Outgoing Models To Succeed?
Nowhere is Americans’ love affair with the CUV more evident than at Acura.

Six to 10 years ago, the brand sold 60,000-70,000 TL midsize sedans per year and another 30,000-40,000 smaller TSX sedans.

This year, the midsize RDX and large MDX CUVs have sold that much through July, while TSX and TL sales total 15,656, WardsAuto data shows.

With the entry-level ILX and flagship RLX sedans selling in very small numbers, to say Acura has a lot riding on the new ’15 TLX to right its car sales is putting it mildly.

I'm biased, in that I'm not at all warm to Acura's current styling language. I find it pedestrian and generic, and the Parrot Beak grill is a design element that never fails to put me off.

So "too much" of one thing, or "not enough" of another? I don't know. But I do know it's not my cup of tea.

Not bad looking, but nothing new, and been there done that styling. It looks like a Honda.... Lexus may have styled their cars after "Predator", but at least they're trying something different.. something hideous and crazy but different...

Too much like the old and too much like Honda still... Come on Acura, you aren't fooling anyone. Put your big boy pants on and develop a real luxury car or unique design language at least...

Agree with the others, this looks like more of the same boring slightly-modified-Honda with a weird face they've been trying to sell fr, what, 15 years?

Might be time to try something new, don't you think?

Exterior aside, Acura needs to restyle the interior. Instrument cluster needs a cleaner look.

It's not as captivating as the TL before the last TL so it will sell like EVERY Acura does with steep discounts. It's a Japanese Mercury. In no way is it premium. It's better looking than the ugly pile it replaces, but it is not a "gotta have" looking car. A Kia Optima SXL looks infinitely more premium for less money and the Hyundai Genesis is a real premium car with excellent build quality and reliability for similar pricing.

Would rather buy the TLX for $30K-ish over the CLA250, Audi A3, BMW 1-series. Personally, they've priced it at a good price point and it looks well proportioned, relatively clean & uncluttered. And the beak is toned down. The CLA just looks awkward. Every time I see one on the road I cringe, the rear lights look weird and the side profile just looks odd and ill proportioned. The A3 looks better but is small and can get pricey with just a bit of options and same with the 1-series BMW.

The Kia optima is looking old and the styling is looking overdone. Also some of the wheels they offer are just plain hideous.

How much did Acura pay you to get on your knees and be a salivating Acura fanboy?

At some point I had the 04 and 05 and still have the 06 TL.. I'll buy the 07 and 08 but that is where I will stop. Their design is horrible now and the inside of it looks like the Accord. The 3rd generation is a nice A to B car that keeps my dogs out of the Audi.

Let me tell you guys. This is possibly one of the best looking sedans in the automotive history.

I am expecting this car to outperform BMW M5 and Audi RS7.

Looks like more of the same failed, boring strategy to me.

The Joker beak of Acura is hideous. Why is the problem of Acura designers?

I think they are borrowed from VW and that's where they get their "we know better" stubbornness.

Acura, Lincoln, and VW; all suffering from the same.
