If you've been following AutoSpies for the past 12 months or so, you would have seen our very positive response to Mercedes-Benz's all-new cars like the CLA-Class and sport-utility variant, the GLA-Class. Both cars were designed with the intent of making an impression while getting a younger demographic into a three-pointed star.

We've seen the CLA do quite well from a sales perspective and now it's the GLA's turn.

One thing we've been wondering about though is how much more differentiated is the GLA over its sedan sibling, the CLA. Now we get to find out as Autocar's Steve Sutcliffe takes out the all-new GLA45 AMG for a spin and compares it to the A45 AMG, which we don't get here in the States.

Admittedly, the GLA's size and height was most perplexing when first introduced as it was nominally different than the hatchback. But it makes more sense knowing that the A-class isn't offered in the states where the GLA should find most of its success. It fits right into the appetite of the American buyer.

Although materials, tech and engineering have come a long way 355HP from 2.0 litres WILL rear its ugly head in a few years. Feel sorry for the second hand purchasers of this thing and the hotrod CLA.
