The All-New Mazda MX-5 Miata Is HERE — What Are YOUR First Impressions?
For a lot of folks, September 3 was a very big day. We'd assume the PR department at Mazda was being kept busy as were some Mazda-specific blogs. It's an interesting product because of its MASSIVE following in the enthusiast community, but it's not THAT interesting.

That's because the two seater market has cooled and while high-end sports cars are typically the place for innovation, the Miata is a bargain basement priced product that's meant to provide just the essentials.

Mazda MX-5 Miata

BUT, I will admit that the vehicle captured my interest. Any all-new product does.

Enthusiasts love this car because it is the go-to track car if you don't have a lot of disposable income. In addition, it can be had with a manual and features rear-wheel drive as it was initially conceptualized to pay homage to British roadsters of yore.

While its original design mimicked the Lotus Elan, it's clear those days are over. Now the MX-5 Miata is sporting body panels that are following the much loved KODO design language from Mazda.

As of now specs remain silent as Mazda just wanted to give you a peek with a blowout international party.

Mazda's press release follows:

Mazda Unveils All-New Mazda MX-5

HIROSHIMA, Japan-Mazda Motor Corporation today celebrated the unveiling of the fourth generation Mazda MX-5 (known as Roadster in Japan) together with fans at events held simultaneously in Japan, USA and Spain. The all-new MX-5, which adopts both SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY and Mazda's KODO-Soul of Motion design language, will be rolled out to global markets starting in 2015.

The MX-5 is an iconic model representing Mazda's vehicle-engineering philosophy-the pursuit of driving pleasure. "Innovate in order to preserve" was the motto for the fourth generation, as the development team searched for innovations that go beyond simple evolution. Environmental and safety demands are much more stringent than they were when the first generation MX-5 was introduced 25 years ago, but the fourth generation stays true to the model's original aim of offering the pure driving fun that only a lightweight sports car can. It achieves this through the adoption of SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY and refinement of its appeal to the senses and sensations through which people enjoy cars.

The design of the all-new MX-5 reveals another layer to Mazda's KODO design language. The exquisite proportions make the driver and passenger stand out, and both the interior and exterior evoke the exhilaration of open-top driving. It is the most compact of any generation MX-5 so far and is more than 100 kilograms lighter than the model it replaces, promising a dramatic leap in Jinba-ittai driving fun.

As of July 2014, total production volume of the Mazda MX-5 exceeded 940,000 units and it continues to hold the Guinness World Record for the best-selling two-seater sports car. This highly-celebrated model has received over 200 awards from around the globe including Japan Car of the Year 2005-2006.

Moving forward, Mazda will continue to develop products which offer all customers driving pleasure and outstanding environmental and safety performance.

Sans the fact that they offer roadsters, neither BMW nor Audi offer anything remotely close in design.

I don't know. The first thought in my mind when I saw the back end was Z3/Z4. Not that that's a bad thing, just what popped up.

BobM is a typical racist moron from 'Murika who is too jealous of the Japanese and the Koreans doing far better than the Americans in terms of economy and branding.

I actually feel sorry for this kid all the time. And just as everyone here knows, he is a sad troll.

about as expected, which is to say good. hope they actually produce a coupe this time, either as a Miata or as a RX7.

dont like the small & squinty headlights; not proportionally aligned with the rest of the design. perhaps it gels better in person

Is the roadster badge necessary on the trunk lid? I can tell it is a roadster from the two doors, lack of a 2nd row, and convertible top. But thanks for clarifying Mazda.

I noticed a couple of things. First, notice the driver on the display pic, how high up his knees are and close to the dash they are? Also, I like the current theme photoshop pics better from the front than this one. It seemed to fit the look better than even their current models. Maybe Mazda felt that theme won't age well, and this theme will age better over time instead of being a fad. The rear reminds me of the new Jaguar F Type and was even commented on that by other auto sites. The dash looks higher quality. Overall, I think it looks good, but not a great as I was expecting. Rumor has it from another site that the 2.0 litre engine will have 160hp and the 1.5 litre will have 125hp. With approx. 2200 lb curb weight and 160hp, should be enough motivation to go 0-60 in approx. 6.5 seconds I would think. That's approx. 13.75 lb per HP. Anyone have educated guesses based on that?

A pretty big change in styling from the last generation but it looks tiny. Very curvy unlike any other Miata before though. From the specs it's about 3 inches shorter on about the same wheelbase and a bit wider actually.

A styling improvement overall from the looks of it, and it's pretty cool that it is mid engined!

Still looking like an icon. I hope the driving is still there.

No longer a "Girlyman's" car. Aggressive, planted, a bit voluptuous. Not completely sold on front headlamps but better than the most current car. Interior looks to be of higher quality coming from the Mazda 3.That's good as the interior of the Toyobaru twins looks cheap in comparison. 220 LBs lighter is quit an accomplishment in todays auto safety regs. If they can at least keep the 2.0 around 165HP it should be a bit quicker than the current model. Nobody is going to buy the 1.5 engine in the US. That has to be for Europe and Asia. Also it should have really decent handling(probably a notch above the Toyobaru twins). Hope they do a Coupe but I'm guessing probably not.

I really love the exterior styling. Looks like a baby F-type and that's a very good thing. The front-end has kind of a too-delicate look about it vs an aggressive look, but it still works very well.

The interior is a letdown. At first glance, it looks cleaner than the previous model. But there are details that I find odd. The handbrake location, with no recessed space when disengaged, seems like it could be intrusive. The cup holders are after thoughts and look cheap. The overall feeling seems claustrophic vs cockpit. And that upper edge of the doors would get very hot or very cold. Can't imagine going for an open-top cruise on a nice sunny days, and putting my arms on that sill and getting scorched.

Pray for a coupe. Otherwise, no sale for me.

Really like it. Hope it ships with some of the bold color choices of the past.
