It's Not Just Texting - Woman Reading Facebook At 85 MPH Rear-Ends SUV Killing Passenger

It's Not Just Texting - Woman Reading Facebook At 85 MPH Rear-Ends SUV Killing Passenger
A 20-year old driver from Hatton, North Dakota, is risking years of prison after she was accused of negligent homicide. The driver was surfing her Facebook account when she rear-ended an SUV at 85 miles per hour, without braking, on a North Dakota highway. An 89-year old woman has died in the accident.

At first, mobile phones were causing huge problems in traffic because of the reckless drivers who stopped paying attention on the road while having their conversations. Once the handsfree devices hit the market, the rate of accidents went lower. However, the roads face now a bigger problem: social media. More and more people cause car crashes because they stay to busy looking at their virtual social activity instead of keeping their eyes on the road.

Unfortunately this is a young white woman and the most she may get slapped with is a case of Affluenza, community service, or be deemed "mentally ill".

She probably won't even have time to take a selfie in jail before she gets off.

Gotta love our justice system.

Sure, if this was your daughter you'd say that? Of course someone lost their grandmother too... penalties should be stiff for this, maybe lose your drivers license for 15 yrs but this is not a hardened criminal full of anger, hate and resentment. Society's worst... I think not. Should she be housed with the thugs, gang bangers with tats on their faces... She's a kid who did something stupid and someone was killed. Its a huge tragic situation but prison? Perhaps there needs to be a kill switch so only the Bluetooth phone works when in a vehicle, no Social Media? Fix the problem and spare kids like this a potential prison term and save grandma.. Fix the problem!

No, C4L, that won't happen. Not when you have the grieving family of the woman killed who absolutely won't let that happen without creating extreme havoc for the justic system. She will not get off easily on this one especially when you have an eyewitness who states that she flew past him while he was going 80, and he clearly saw no brakes lights prior to impact.

No @cidflekken, you proved my point, the fact that it takes an eyewitness to practically testify at this young woman's wrong doing before she is convicted is sad.

Don't you remember the case of the 17 year old drunk driver, Ethan Couch, who killed 2, got off with doing therapy and the judge declared him a case of "affluenza"...that was a disgusting day for our justice system and the families who lost loved ones

Anyone who thinks blacks and whites in this country are treated equally under our justice system is either a racist, or living under a rock...or both.

Or they just don't pay attention to the stories that get the most attention from the media. Tell me who Dillon Taylor is. Tell me who Andy Gaynier is. Oh, you probably can't without googling their names. They are two unarmed white males who were shot and killed by cops in the same time frame that Michael Brown was shot and kille. And, based on eyewitness events, under questionable circumstances. Why don't you know about these two? Because the Michael Brown/Ferguson, i.e., black male killed by white cop, issue dominated news coverage.

@cidflekken, it's more than media bites bud and I'm disappointed you'd make such an ignorant statement considering I agree with you most of the time on here, but I'm more than happy to educate you a bit. I also suggest befriending more members of the African American community and you will realize Trayvon Martin/Michael Brown are just a drop in the bucket for the trauma that community has faced

From 1999 to 2005, African Americans constituted about 13 percent of drug users, but they made up about 46 percent of those convicted for drug offenses

1 out of every 3 black men versus 1 out of 17 white men are expected to be convicted this year

After young white men have committed mass shooting after mass shooting, from Colmbine to Gabby Giffords at the grocery store, to the movie theater massacre, to Sandy Hook, and more they are more likely to be deemed mentally I'll than serve time and labeled a thug as black men usually are

Just a few months back the 17 yr old drunk driving killed 2 people and was slapped with therapy and declared a case of "affluenza" lol.

Justin Bieber spit at an officer and cursed at him after being pulled over for drag racing and served one night in jail.

The list goes on and on and on and on

It can kind of be compared to this. Like how the automotive world is a constant struggle between the Europeans & the Japanese/Americans.

And when people say "Oh, I like all kinds of real good cars. But Porsche 911 Turbo is without a doubt the best car, and Nissan GT-R is for boy racers. It is like a playstation, the car just does everything for you lol", obviously those people are flat-out Europe worshippers and not really interested in the "real" good cars at all.

Those are the same type of people who say that Corvette C7 is still a cheap car with tons of plastic, etc etc, and their standard is something like Lamborghini Aventador, LaFerrari, Porsche 918 and such super mega elitist cars from Europe that can be bought only by millionaires and the billionaires.

And when we call them "Oh you are a badgewhore!", they tell us "No, we only love the 'good' cars."

Same case.

@C4L, first, my statement did nothing to "prove your point". It served to distinguish this case from others. Example: No one truly knew what happened in the Trayvon Martin case because there were no definitive first-hand eyewitness accounts to influence the decision. In this case, there is.

Regarding my second point of media coverage, you still have not provided ANY information as to why the public doesn't know those two white males shot and killed under similar circumstances as Mike Brown. You actually only serve to further prove my point. You only focus on those cases that have received the most media attention.

About your statistic of 13% users vs 46% incarceration, well, does that really prove your point? Not in the least. Drug dealers are not inherently drug users and vice versa. That's just common sense.

And thank you for offering to "educate" me and suggesting I become better acquainted with the African American community. I seriously can't stop laughing at your blatant arrogance and assumptive approach in those two statements. Just laughable. Maybe YOU'D be surprised at just how many African American friends that I DO, in fact, have, and are the exact ones wondering why Ferguson is getting so much coverage while other white-victim crimes are swept under the rug. They feel just as uncomfortable with how these things are being handled because they realize just how detrimental it can be to the cause.

And I'll add: If you can't distinguish the different level of psychoses that is involved in mass killings vs. street violence, then I can't help you.

BUT, I will agree that the "affluenza" verdict was uncalled for and I signed numerous petitions to have that judge disbarred.

Again, just another subject that we will agree to disagree on. That's really all I care to say.

Sorry, I will add one more thing.

I need to be clear and say that yes, racial inequality still exists in this country. BUT, based on media coverage, it may not be a imbalanced as we are led to believe it is. Based on media coverage, I've heard people from outside of our country ask "why is it only the blacks being mistreated" or "why are all blacks being killed". THAT's the untrue imbalance that I wished to address, not stating that there wasn't unequal treatment.

Seriously??? @cidflekken, would be more happy if people outside our country asked why are more blacks disproportionately treated bad? Or why is it more young black men are 17 times more likely to get charged more harshly than a white make for the same offense...

Let's be honest, our country has a filthy record when it comes to the treatment of blacks, must I remind u of the civil rights era...come on man

Where the hell did you get that I'd "be more happy if people outside our country asked why are more blacks treated bad"? Never said that. I said that's what I see they are currently asking because of the only media coverage they get.

Look, I already said that there is still inequality that exists. But there's more to the story than what the media wants to feed you or what the public wants to decry as injustice. If you don't want to believe or see that, then that's fine.

Car4LifeCar4Life - 9/6/2014 7:59:25 PM

@cidflekken, there's always more to the story, but it's your comments like "than the public decrys injustice for" is what exudes arrogance & ignorance at the same time. At the end of the day young unarmed black men are shot and killed by officers because of that same mentality..."there's more to the story" get out of here with that

I don't care how much more to the story their is, if the young man has not killed anyone himself unlike this young lady did who was driving recklessly, he should not be shot. Sure some don't come from great backgrounds, they should not be shot like animals and most certainly not have their corpse layed out in the street for hours such as the young man you brought up, Michael Brown

So, if "there's always more to the story", how can my statement exude "arrogance and ignorance"? Then you go on to say that you don't care how much more to the story there is. Excuse me, but THAT'S the problem here, in ANY case of perceived injustice, against a black or white. Too many people make face-value, surface-level assumptions about a situation without understanding the full facts. Then they react accordingly, creating havoc and division in the public. And those are facts that you CANNOT refute. All the reasons why I mentioned the eyewitness in this texting case as irrefutable facts that she was distracted while driving.

Car4LifeCar4Life - 9/8/2014 10:12:14 AM

Your obviously upset, let me calm you down, no one cares what you deem refutable or irrefutable, no one cares whether or not you feel a community standing up against the consistent injustices against their community is warranted or not, no one cares that you get your panties in a bunch when ppl from outside the country even recognize the people of color, specifically black people, are treated less than in a country that would not be possible were it not for the blood, sweat, tears, and sacrifices of their ancestors.

What we do care about is that the black community sees a day when they too are treated as equal and are allowed the same benefit of doubt before they are shot like animals or thrown in jail at the drop of a dime.

We care that they see the same justice and treated just as equally as the white drunk driving teen, Ethan Couch, who killed two, and told his friend,"Don't worry we'll get off".

We care they they see the same justice as this young lady who killed a woman because she was trying to see how many likes her post got.

That's what we care about it.

It's my opinion that Michael Brown was a thug that got exactly what he deserved. He apparently threatened and bullied the store owner and assaulted the police officer that shot him. The officer apparently received serious injury to his eye socket at the hands of Brown. This incident has nothing to do with race to me. If it would have been a white thug, which there are plenty of, and he was shot by a black officer I'd want to pin a medal on that officer as well. The difference is that had the races been reversed it may have not even made the national news. There are plenty of wonderful black people in this country. The black community should look to some of them for role models like Ben Carson or retired col. West from Florida instead of Al Sharpton & Jesse Jackson. The former are men of integrity and I'd love to see either of them become the next President by the way.
